Important Updates on the 2027 IHEA Congress

As announced in the last newsletter, the 2027 IHEA congress will be held in Santiago, Chile. We are making excellent progress on our congress planning, working closely with our Local Organizing Committee in Santiago. We are delighted to confirm the originally scheduled dates for the congress (July 11-14 for the main congress and July 10-11 for the pre-congress sessions).
In this edition of the IHEA newsletter, you will find calls for the following:
- EOI for serving on the Review Panel
- Congress abstracts
- Early Career Researchers (ECRs) from Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) to submit their draft abstracts for early feedback
- Experienced researchers to assist ECRs from LMICs by providing preliminary review of their draft abstracts
- Pre-congress session proposals
Key Dates for the 2027 IHEA Congress:
Call for Expressions of Interest to Serve on the IHEA Scientific Committee Review Panel
IHEA is currently seeking expressions of interest from health economists with a research publication track record to serve on the Review Panel of the Scientific Committee for the 2027 IHEA Congress. We are looking for abstract reviewers with research expertise covering the full spectrum of fields within health economics. These broad fields are:
- Health, its valuation, distribution and economic consequences
- Health beyond the health system
- Demand and utilization of health services
- Supply and regulation of health services and products
- Health care financing and expenditures
- Economic evaluation of health and related care interventions
- Evaluation of policy, programs and health system performance
Full details of the sub-fields within each of these fields can be found here. Those expressing an interest in serving on the Review Panel will be requested to identify the primary field and several sub-fields in which they have expertise, so you are encouraged to review the list of sub-fields before completing the application form. Abstract reviews will be undertaken from early December 2026 until early January 2027; all applicants should be available to undertake reviews during this period.
While some of the members from the previous Scientific Committee will be returning for the 2027 congress, the plan is to have a mixture of members with varying tenures to ensure continuity in the operations of the Scientific Committee while providing opportunities for all members to participate and contribute to the success of the IHEA Congresses. Review Panel members will normally serve for three consecutive Congresses.
IHEA would like to especially encourage mid-career researchers to express an interest in serving on the Scientific Committee Review Panel. Final decisions on membership of the panel will need to accommodate gender and geographic diversity as well as providing adequate coverage of the broad fields and sub-fields. Expressions of interest should be submitted online here.
Please note: If you served on the Scientific Committee for the 2025 congress, you should not complete this form; you will be contacted directly to find out if you are willing to continue serving on the Review Panel.

Call for Abstracts: 2027 IHEA World Congress on Health Economics
IHEA is pleased to invite you to join us at the Universidad de Chile in Santiago, Chile for the 17th World Congress on Health Economics from July 11th –14th, 2027. IHEA congresses are well-established as the forum to learn about the latest research in health economics from around the world, the implications of this research for health policy and practice, and new methodological developments in the discipline.
We would like to encourage health economists and economists to make submissions in the form of an individual abstract or an organized session. Abstract submissions are due to open in August 2026 and will close on November 10th, 2026. Abstracts should be a maximum of 500 words and should focus on research that is yet to be published. Organized sessions should take the form of an integrated set of a minimum of 4 presentations; the inclusion of one or more formal discussants is encouraged. Proposals for organized sessions should include a description of the session (maximum of 400 words), including how participant discussion will be promoted, as well as a 500-word abstract for each paper that will be presented.
To foster diversity and promote submission of high-quality abstracts, each person will be restricted to submitting only two abstracts for which they are the presenter. This could include:
- two individual abstracts,
- one individual abstract and one as part of an organized session, or
- two presentations as part of two organized sessions.
Abstract submitters will be asked to identify the most relevant health economics primary field and sub-fields related to their research. This information allows us to ensure that every submission is reviewed by appropriate experts in those sub-fields and that sessions are organized to include similar topics.
Submissions will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee and the outcomes of the review process will be announced in early March 2027. Call for Early Career Researchers in Low- and Middle-Income Countries to Submit Draft Abstracts for the 2027 IHEA Congress
IHEA will once again be offering support to early career researchers (ECRs) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) who do not have access to senior colleagues at their institution.
LMIC ECRs are able to submit a draft abstract by mid-September for review and detailed feedback on how to improve the abstract. A team of established health economists will review each abstract and provide detailed feedback on how the abstract can be improved by mid-October, to allow researchers to finalize and submit their abstracts before the submission deadline on 10 November 2026.
Those who would like to apply for such support should fulfil the following basic criteria:
- Must have graduated with their highest degree within the last five years;
- Must be a citizen of, and working or studying in, an LMIC; and
- The abstract must be on research undertaken in an LMIC.
As the purpose of this initiative is to provide support to LMIC ECRs who do not have access to senior collegial support, the following criteria must be met:
- If the ECR is currently studying at a university in a high-income country, the abstract should not be for research that is being undertaken as part of the master’s or Ph.D. training for which the ECR is receiving supervisory support;
- The ECR must be working in an institution that does not have senior health economics staff;
- The abstract should not have established health economists as co-authors.

Abstracts should be a maximum of 500 words. Application forms may be found and submitted, together with abstracts, here. Application forms and abstracts should be submitted by 22 September 2026.
LMIC ECRs who participate in the abstract support program, and whose abstract is selected by the Scientific Committee for presentation at the 2027 congress, will be offered support in preparing their presentation.
Call for Volunteers to Pre-Review and Comment on Draft Abstracts for the 2027 IHEA Congress From Early Career Researchers (ECRs) in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs)
IHEA will once again be offering support to early career researchers (ECRs) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) who do not have access to senior colleagues at their institution.
We are looking for experienced health economists to assist in reviewing these draft abstracts and providing detailed comments on how the abstracts can be improved before ECRs submit them for consideration by the 2027 Congress Scientific Committee. Each volunteer would be allocated a few abstracts in their area of research expertise. To assist us with the matching process, please mail a copy of your CV to ihea@healtheconomics.org

Call for Pre-Congress Session Proposals: IHEA 2027 Congress, Santiago
A program of pre-congress sessions will take place on Saturday, 10 July 2027 and Sunday, 11 July 2027 at the Universidad de Chile in Santiago. The sessions provide an opportunity to take advantage of health economists coming together from around the world. These sessions are organized and coordinated by the person or organization submitting the proposal, after review by IHEA and the Local Organizing Committee. Depending on the nature of the meeting, sessions may be open or closed (e.g., by invitation only), but preferably should be open for all congress delegates to join. IHEA particularly encourages capacity-strengthening workshops.
Rooms with a range of seating capacity are available and sessions can be scheduled for two hours, half-day (3.5 hours including refreshment break), or full day. The cost to session organizers is as presented in the table below. Two-day sessions are also possible; the cost is double that for a single day. Any surplus generated from the pre-congress sessions will be used to assist in covering the costs of the core congress and keep congress registration fees as low as possible.
All rooms will be equipped with a laptop, data projector, screen and microphone. Unfortunately, hybrid format is not feasible. Mid-morning and afternoon beverages will be provided for all pre-congress session participants.
Proposals for pre-congress sessions should be submitted by 18 December 2026 using this online form; please note that acceptance of proposals may close before that date as available space will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Proposals should provide the following information:
- Name, institutional affiliation and contact details of session organizer
- Session title
- A description of the intended audience for the session
- Preferred session length (two hours, half-day, full day, or two-day) and room type
- Preferred session date(s) (Saturday, July 10th and/or Sunday, July 11th); note that scheduling will be done on a first-come, first-served basis)
- Description of session format (e.g. training workshop, mini-conference with open call for peer-review of abstracts, organized session, meeting, etc.) and whether the session will be open to all delegates or by invitation only
- A brief description of the session (max. 100 words); this will be used to assess the proposed session, and if accepted, will be posted on the Congress website and in the program
- A conflict of interest attestation
- Billing details (name, organization and contact details for invoice)
To facilitate access for delegates with limited financial resources, such as those from low- and middle- income countries, students and early career researchers, organizers may not charge congress delegates a fee to participate in pre-congress sessions. IHEA encourages session organizers to seek sponsorship to cover the costs of their session; sponsors of pre-congress sessions will be listed on the congress website and acknowledged in the session.
Overviews of accepted sessions will be listed on the congress website and included in informational emails sent to congress participants and the congress program. Session organizers are encouraged to advertise their session through other websites and listservs. Congress delegates will have an opportunity to register for these sessions in advance.

Please be advised that IHEA will never contact members with requests of this nature. If you receive any such message, do not respond or engage, and report it as spam through your email provider where possible.
If you receive an email that appears to be from IHEA or one of our IHEA Board Members, and are unsure, please do not hesitate to reach out to ihea@healtheconomics.org to confirm its legitimacy before responding.
6th Meeting of the Asian Workshop on Econometrics and Health Economics
We are delighted to announce the 6th Meeting of the Asian Workshop on Econometrics and Health Economics, which will take place in Seoul, South Korea, from Sunday, December 13 to Wednesday, December 16, 2026.
This year’s keynote lecture will be given by Professor Anirban Basu of the University of Washington.
Researchers are invited to submit full paper drafts for consideration. The workshop welcomes submissions from researchers at all career stages, with a special encouragement for doctoral students and early-career researchers to present their work. Submissions will be reviewed based on full paper drafts. The submission and registration form will be available in early July on the workshop website.
The deadline for paper submission and registration is Thursday, August 13, 2026. Further details, including past programs, are also available on the workshop website.
