About the Webinar:

Despite an abundance of descriptive evidence in advanced illness – including volume of population health needs, associated costs, unmanaged symptoms, unmet preferences, risk of impoverishment – there is a paucity of evaluative evidence to inform improvement efforts. Trials are rare but routine data collection commonplace, creating need and opportunity for natural experiment methods. This session will feature two applied evaluations of policy changes for people with advanced illness in the UK. Dr Nicola White (University College London) will present on how extending the statutory prognostic threshold affected fast tracked end-of-life benefit access in England and Wales [paper out now: 10.1186/s12916-026-05148-5]. Ana Maksimovic (King’s College London) will present on how expanding use of Electronic Palliative Care Coordination Systems to support advance care planning for people living with life-threatening conditions affected end-of-life outcomes in North-West London [protocol here: 10.1136/bmjopen-2024-093175].

Speaker:

Dr Nicola White is a Principal Research Fellow & Deputy Head of the Marie Curie Palliative Care Research Department at University College London. Ana Maksimovic is a PhD student in health economics at Cicely Saunders Institute of Palliative Care, Policy and Rehabilitation at King’s College London.
