The New Simpler iHEA membership system
We've streamlined and simplified the iHEA membership structure. If you have any questions or need help in deciding what type of membership is right for you, contact Christopher Martin.
Why did you change it?
We've felt that too many options were complicating the membership process. We have retained the Student and Low Income membership options because these are core to iHEA's mission. Ultimately we wanted to make it as easy as possible for you to join iHEA.
Where are the Affiliate Memberships?
We are developing a new approach to affiliate memberships for 2008, we will be making an announcement about it in the near future.
Looking for 2008 ASHE Memberships? ASHE has their own online registration system for 2008. Check the ASHE Join page for more information.

Why Become an iHEA Member?
What Your Membership Means to You
iHEA maintains a number of services for its members and the health research community at large. These include:
- iHEAweek
iHEAweek is our weekly electronic newsletter that provides our members with timely e-mailed information on jobs, conferences and other information valuable to our members. - Conferences
The Worldwide Congress of Health Economists, held biennially (Vancouver 1996, Rotterdam 1999, York 2001, San Francisco 2003, Barcelona 2005, Copenhagen 2007 and coming soon, Beijing 2009) is iHEA's premiere research showcase. It features current peer-reviewed research and provides flexible networking opportunities for researchers, students, industry representatives and policy makers alike. Conferences are also designed to allow contentious issues to be aired while providing a forum for hearing from a variety of viewpoints. Perhaps most importantly we have embarked on a process of making as much of our conference proceedings freely available on-line through our conference web site. iHEA also collaborates to support the biennial ASHE (American Society of Health Economists) (Madison 2006 and coming soon Duke 2007) and other regional and national health economics meetings. - Journals
iHEA has a number of publishers of health economics journals with which it maintains a relationship so we can offer individual journal subscriptions at a discount to the members - National/Regional Associations
iHEA attempts to provide both support and technical assistance to regional and national association that are under development around the world. The association also works with established associations to provide a central focus for the internationalization of health economics. - Worldwide Directory of Health Economists
Maintained online as a PDF on demand. - iHEA Scientific Committee
160 expert health economists are appointed by the board to serve on the standing Scientific Committee. They constitute the review panel for the sessions at the iHEA conference and are also called upon as reviewers for other conferences and journals, and for technical assistance. - University Members
Universities that become organizational members of iHEA will have their graduate and professional training programs listed in our Education Directory, will be able to have their working paper series posted into the archives (pending) without charge, are able to apply for Conference Scholarships, and share in the governance and scientific review of iHEA. - Education Directory
This directory lists graduate and post-graduate training programs conducted by member universities, and selected programs offered by other organizational members and non-member universities. - healtheconomics.org
At iHEA's web site a user can browse for jobs currently available, find members in various countries, register for the iHEA conference, search for other types of conferences, access the newsletter archives and governance reports, link to journals, books, national associations, government agencies and information repositories, or read articles of interest regarding health economics activities. - Students
One of the most important mandates of the association is supporting the development of health and health care research students. To that end, iHEA maintains a low-cost full-service membership for students. They are able to find information on jobs, conferences for presenting their work, research for their theses and access to mentors and research support through the membership network. iHEA also provides many students with reduced or waived conference fees, and has recently created cash and honoraria for the top three student papers presented at each conference.
Why YOU should Join iHEA
Our members are the defining purpose of iHEA. The broader the representation of individual and organizational memberships, the more relevant the association is and the more services it can develop for its members. As a result you can tap into a network of established and emerging health economists, the latest research and other resources that will make your job easier. Your membership, however small or large, is why iHEA continues to thrive.
Why Organizations Should Join
Organizations that support the development of health economics as a field need to be a part of the main professional body. Although iHEA governance is based on individual membership participation, those individuals' link to health economics is usually most strongly expressed by their institutional affiliation; a university, a government agency, pharmaceutical company, NGO or consultancy. These organizations build the strength and expertise of health economics by supporting iHEA, and in turn are able to raise their profile and participation in health economics as a field of research and study. While benefits of organizational membership are real, organizational membership is a recognized demonstration of institutional support for health economics as field.

Why Industry and Government Should Join
As iHEA represents the largest gathering of serious researchers in health economics, industry membership provides an opportunity to join the dialogue, providing context and information often not discussed. iHEA has worked hard to ensure that all viewpoints have an opportunity to be taken into consideration as researchers and analysts are best able to decide the ultimate worth of the research. An example of this commitment is iHEA's adoption of a fully blinded review of all contributed research abstracts (with separate interest disclosure for all submissions, whether from NGOs, academia, governments or industry). This ensures that all researchers have a fair shot of presenting at iHEA conferences on the promise and strength of their research, not their affiliation. The iHEA Board is very aware of the need for a diversity of views to enable effective governance. Therefore special efforts are made to ensure that there is a wide representation of geographic and organizational interests built into the governance and committee structures of the association.
Why Individuals Should Join
Individual membership is vital to the credibility of our professional association. It is the breadth of individual support, from researchers, professors, consultants, policy makers and analysts at all levels which strengthen the association. We rely on personal commitment, identification and support to be a truly independent researcher-based association. As such, only individuals have the right to vote during a General Meeting.
Advocacy and iHEA
Conflicts of interest are inherent in health economics as many interests are represented and served in iHEA. The support of one position over another, even with seemingly innocuous issues, will ultimately pit the interests of one element of the membership against another. This is why iHEA does not advocate on any issue. Ultimately, the role of iHEA is to improve the rigor and standards of the process -- not to endorse a set of conclusions.
