Monash University is seeking to appoint as a professorial director of health economics a dynamic, entrepreneurial academic leader, with research, policy-setting and consulting experience relating to the broad discipline of health economics. As Professor and Director of the Centre for Health Economics, the appointee will ensure further development of the size, scope and impact of the centre.
The Director will be located in new premises in the strategic research precinct of Monash’s Clayton campus and will report to the Deputy Dean, Faculty of Business and Economics. The Centre for Health Economics is comprised of a large, independent group of health economists which has been seen as a centre of excellence in health economics research and teaching. Its members publish original research in health economics and have made a significant contribution to debate and policy development in the healthcare sector.
The appointee will perform an important leadership role as manager of the centre and leader of the research and consulting activities. He or she will promote and develop the research strengths of the group and contribute to the established graduate and undergraduate teaching programs in health economics. The appointee will be expected also to lead the team within the centre in the development of strategic initiatives in research and consultancies that will strengthen the centre’s reputation and role in health policy research and extend its links with research collaborators and funders within Australia and internationally.
The appointee will make a distinguished contribution to the activities of relevant professional bodies locally, nationally and internationally. He or she will maintain and strengthen links with regional government and non-government organisations, professional associations and other relevant organisations. The director will participate as required in the faculty and university administrative tasks.
The successful applicant will possess a research doctorate in a relevant discipline or equivalent research achievements; an international reputation for outstanding health economics research; a record of obtaining external grants for research and in successful supervision of post-graduate research students; proven excellence in teaching; highly developed skills of leadership, networking and management. He or she will have a strong track record in building appropriate linkages with both government and industry.

Canada Research Chair Tier II: Health Economist: Dalhousie University

Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Medicine invites applications for a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Health Economics. The incumbent’s research program will be based in the Canadian Centre for Vaccinology and the Department of Medicine, with a primary academic appointment in the Department of Pediatrics or Medicine. Dalhousie’s Faculty of Medicine is a centre of excellence with internationally recognized clinical and research expertise. There are active collaborations across faculties and with the Nova Scotia Department of Health. In 2003 and 2004, The Scientist magazine placed Dalhousie among the top five places in the world, outside the United States, for postdoctoral work and scientific research.
The incumbent will have the opportunity to develop and further their own research agenda working with multidisciplinary colleagues particularly in the Canadian Centre for Vaccinology, and the Cancer Outcome Research program or other major research program of the Department of Medicine. Depending on the incumbent’s interests, research areas could be related to health policy, economic evaluation, cost effectiveness analysis related to systematic reviews, clinical trials and epidemiological studies. The incumbent would have the opportunity to develop research along-side the many health policy research studies and clinical trials undertaken by the Faculty, and to utilize the unique large population-level databases maintained by the Population Health Research Unit for broader health policy or health systems research.
The ideal candidate will have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline, with preference given for specialization in health economics, have a substantial record of peer-reviewed publication, and will demonstrate evidence of an independent ability to attract research funding. The Canada Research Chair (CRC) Program is supported by the Government of Canada and was established to enable Canadian Universities to achieve the highest levels of research excellence. The School of Chemical Sciences and Pharmacy, established in 2002, is a school developed from the existing, and very successful, School of Chemical Sciences (5 rated in RAE 2001).
