Statistical Analyst /Programmer: University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine, General Internal Medicine

The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine invites statistical analysts/programmers with training and experience in statistics and/or health economics to apply for an immediate position in the Division of General Internal Medicine (DGIM). DGIM is a multidisciplinary group of health services researchers with training in economics, statistics, medicine, psychology, and sociology supporting the research and educational missions of the University of Pennsylvania. The position requires the ability to function as a member of a multidisciplinary research team.

Analyst duties include managing administrative and survey data, statistical programming in SAS or STATA, learning and applying new statistical techniques for existing projects or proposals, performing econometrics and biostatistical analyses, and supporting the writing of manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals. Position contingent upon funding.

Qualification: Candidates must have at least a master’s degree in statistics or economics or a related field or three or more years experience in this type of position. Significant work-related experience with STATA and/or SAS required. Candidates should have some knowledge of and experience conducting health outcomes or health economics research.

Data Analyst: Center for Practice Management and Outcomes Research, VA Medical Center, and the University of Michigan Health System

Location: Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA

Full-time preferred, but will also consider part time (at least 20 hours/week). Approximate starting salary range: $67,000 - $81,000 (depending on experience) + benefits.

Start date: Flexible.

Description: Join a dynamic group of over 30 MD and PhD research scientists to investigate methods to assess and improve quality of health care. Provide consultation on issues of study design and statistical analysis for health services research projects. Conduct statistical analyses as a team member or co-investigator on a variety of studies related to quality of care assessment and improving health care delivery and self-management for persons with chronic conditions. Supervise data managers.

Requirements: PhD in statistics, biostatistics, or epidemiology preferred, but will also consider applicants with a Master’s degree in a similar field who have extensive experience.

Experience with the following is required:

  • SAS or STATA data analysis software;
  • advanced statistical techniques, including survival and time series analyses, multi-level modeling, and working with non-linear dependent variables;
  • managing large healthcare data sets;
  • writing grants and manuscripts.

Data Analyst Programmer

The data analyst programmer will prepare, manage and analyze research dataset using SAS and has experience with programming in basic programming languages. You will serve as liaison between our scientific staff, R&D and IT to support system development. You have demonstrated skill in programming SAS and are familiar with statistics and have communication skills. Preferably you had a training in biostatics and proven experience handling large, relational databases.

Essential Functions

  • Does considerable SAS programming and directs and supervises other SAS programmers
  • Works closely with the Outcomes Research Health Economist and Medical Informaticist in designing, conducting and analyzing clinical and financial outcomes studies
  • Takes primary responsibility for statistical analysis of complex data, and serves as a statistical resource for other Outcomes Research staff
  • Continuously updates analytical applications to maintain timely and relevant medical information
  • Coordinates internal studies of claims data to determine cost trends and program impact on clients
  • Serves as an internal consultant to help define analytic needs and to help end-users interpret and apply analytic results

Education: Master or PhD (or equivalent training) in a rigorous, quantitative discipline, such as health services research, actuarial science, statistics, or economics is required.

  • 2 years experience successfully managing projects;
  • Demonstrated SAS programming skills;

Research Programmer: Baker Institute

The Research Programmer will be responsible for programming and statistical analysis of large medical record and health insurance claims databases, as well as population-based health surveys for the Baker Institute health policy program. Duties to include, but are not limited to, preparing raw data files for analysis on a PC platform, including complex multiple dataset merges, data file reshaping, interpretation of accompanying documentation, and definition of stud variable. Multivariate regression analysis of databases using SAS and Stata. Assisting in the writing of manuscripts and policy briefs based on statistical analyses and providing research assistance in the preparation of new grant proposals.

Requires: Master’s Degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Economics or other discipline; training in regression analysis and programming; and at least two years programming with SAS. Must be familiar with PC platform and Microsoft Office software.

Prefers: Experience with programming with Stata; experience with analysis of population-based health care databases, longitudinal panel data analysis and limited dependent variable regressions, background in health care related field or public policy analysis.
