The three positions are part of a research project entitled Hospital of the Future funded by The Danish Strategic Research Council; the project also involves three PhD scholarships.

Hospital of the Future

The project is concerned with development, adaption, and testing of methods from microeconomics and management science with the general aim of increasing hospital efficiency and effectiveness, for instance optimized patient pathways, capacity planning and utilization, and incentive schemes.

The project has three pillars, each consisting of a number of work packages, 1. Logistics and production planning; 2. Incentives; and 3. Productivity measurement and economies of scale and scope.

It is an important objective to test the methods in close collaboration with clinicians and professional hospital staff to maximize fit with and relevance for daily practice. DFID will support the development and launch of a new programme that will strengthen the evidence base and help countries to plan and implement progressive health financing reforms. On behalf of DFID, HLSP is looking for a senior consultant for 9-12 months to lead the design and consultation process, and to develop support for the launch of a centre or network to deliver these objectives.

The successful candidate will have:

• A sound understanding of health financing in developing countries
• A firm grasp of the ‘architecture’ of international aid to health
• A track record of influencing and mobilising policy-makers
• A high level of credibility with stakeholders and development partners

The University of Manchester is seeking to recruit an econometrician to work on a project funded by the Medical Research Council Methodology Research Programme. The project aims to attribute patient reported health outcomes to the effects of care providers by applying recently-developed techniques for separating effects in matched datasets. Working with a team of NHS and University based health economists, econometricians, statisticians, clinicians and health service researchers, you will develop econometric techniques and apply them to a range of large, hierarchical, longitudinal datasets on health outcomes.

You should have a postgraduate qualification (or equivalent) in economics or other relevant subject, a strong conceptual understanding of econometrics, and the ability to apply and communicate econometric techniques. Previous experience of working with health data and large datasets is desirable.

This position is tenable for three years in the first instance.
