Health Economics Research Team Leader
Location: Lusaka, Zambia
The Center for Global Health and Development (CGHD) at Boston University is seeking an applied economist at the master’s or doctoral level to coordinate its research on the economics of HIV/AIDS interventions in Zambia. This is a Lusaka-based, project-funded position at the level of technical staff or assistant professor, depending on qualifications, with the potential for annual renewal depending on the availability of funding and the researcher’s performance.
Background
The CGHD at Boston University is a multidisciplinary research unit committed to improving public health and promoting social and economic development in the developing world. One of the CGHD’s largest research programs aims to understand and strengthen HIV/AIDS interventions in high-prevalence countries. In Zambia, CGHD has been evaluating the costs, outcomes, and cost-effectiveness of HIV/AIDS treatment and PMTCT programs since 2006, with support from PEPFAR. The U.S.-based PI works with a Lusaka-based research team at Boston University Center for Global Health and Development/Zambia (CGHD/Z) to implement these activities.
Responsibilities
The current opening is for a versatile economic analyst who can provide leadership to the local research team, expand local capacity in response to new opportunities, and help the PI develop new research ideas.
Responsibilities include:
- Serve as a co-investigator or principal investigator on CGHD studies.
- Manage the local study team, including hiring, training, and supervising researchers and data collectors.
- Manage study implementation, including local IRB review, project finances, etc., in collaboration with CGHD/Z core staff.
- Identify and obtain approval from potential study sites, in consultation with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders.
- Analyze data and draft reports and manuscripts.
- Present study and findings to local and international audiences and organize and participate in training and dissemination workshops and conferences as needed.
- With the PI, generate and develop new ideas for using economic analysis to inform HIV/AIDS and other health programming in Zambia.
- Participate in CGHD/Z office activities and collaborate with other CGHD/Z staff and projects as needed and appropriate.
- Collaborate with CGHD faculty in other countries and on other projects as opportunities allow.
Requirements:
- Master’s or doctoral degree in economics or a closely related field.
- Technical competence in economic and statistical analysis and quantitative impact evaluation.
- Experience in carrying out applied research and evaluation in developing country settings.
- Experience in project management and administration.
- Willingness to reside in Lusaka, Zambia for two years or more.
