Director, Global Implementation Research

Location: Washington, DC

The Research Department seeks a Washington DC- based Director, Global Implementation Research to lead and provide strategic thinking for the global implementation research activities of the Foundation. He/she will report directly to the Vice President for Research and will work with colleagues throughout the Foundation to meet the Foundation’s goal of advancing research that enhances the prevention, care and treatment of Pediatric HIV/AIDS, with the ultimate mission of elimination of pediatric HIV/AIDS. He/she will provide direct technical and management support to research team members (5-7 direct reports) in addition to working closely with the Program Implementation Department to ensure smooth integration and coordination of research with program and monitoring and evaluation activities. He/she will also contribute to the Foundation’s efforts to increase the research capacity of our global staff (primarily in Africa).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the global implementation research portfolio, including research that is conducted, funded, or facilitated by the Foundation.
  • Work closely with VP of Research to develop, manage and mentor a small but rapidly growing global research team to support the Foundation’s mission.
  • Work with Foundation leadership, Country Representatives and the Research Department to determine priority areas for implementation research
  • Develop Foundation-wide research policies and procedures
  • Lead collaboration with the Foundation M&E Team to maximize use of program data to design and implement research that will contribute to global program improvement
  • Work with VP of Research to obtain new funding for Foundation priority research areas that are responsive to the needs of the field and address scientific questions of critical global importance.
  • Provide technical research oversight and support (protocol development, study implementation, data collection, analysis and interpretation, publication) to US and in-country teams
  • Oversee the monitoring of international studies to ensure compliance with all regulatory and funding requirements
  • Work with Policy and Communications to develop policies, procedures and communication strategies around Foundation research activities and results
  • Develop external research collaborations to facilitate the research that will achieve the Foundation’s mission of eliminating Pediatric HIV/AIDS

Required Qualifications

  • PhD or similar advanced degree in a relevant field (such as medicine, nursing, social science, public health)
  • Ten or more years experience conducting clinical, behavioral or implementation research in HIV/AIDS, reproductive/ maternal health, or child survival in developing country settings. Strong social science experience is a plus.
  • Experience in training, mentoring, and providing technical support to health professionals in research design, research methodologies and study implementation in developing countries, preferably in Africa

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated technical expertise in the conduct of international research in countries with limited resources
  • Demonstrated strong leadership skills with experience managing a diverse team of strong research professionals
  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and management skills
  • High level of energy and maturity with ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with competing priorities
  • Self-starter, proactive, responsible and results-oriented
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Experience with obtaining and managing federally-funded research is a plus
  • Ability to travel internationally up to 30% or as needed
  • Demonstrated competency to the R4/S4 levels in English required
  • French and/or Portuguese competency to the R3/S3 levels a plus
