The role

As part of our continuing expansion, Medaxial is creating the new position of Director, Health Economics and Market Access. This position is intended to enhance significantly the company’s profile and capabilities.

The role will involve:

  • Establishing an HE/MA center of excellence within the company
  • Controlling the quality of our HE/MA-related output
  • Providing HE/MA support for project teams, including group training and individual mentoring
  • Undertaking direct or shared supervision of projects with challenging HE/MA content
  • Contributing to innovative solutions for pitches and projects in development
  • Supporting business development by helping to optimize relationships with clients and contacts
  • Taking a lead role in initiating and running Medaxial seminars, workshops and activities at international conferences and meetings
  • Providing input into the strategic development of the company

The Director, Health Economics and Market Access will report to the Managing Director of Medaxial, and will work alongside the Vice President, Consultancy Services, who is responsible for managing our project teams.

Qualifications

The ideal applicant will combine a high level of health economic literacy with creative instincts and a talent for communicating health economic arguments in a lucid and accessible manner. Specific requirements include:

  • A postgraduate qualification in health economics or a related discipline
  • At least 3 years’ experience in a health economics/market access role within the healthcare industry, preferably in a global or international context, or equivalent agency experience
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • A positive, can-do attitude
  • An interest in real-world decision-making and in communicating health economic concepts and arguments to those without formal HE training

Job Description

The Public Health Policy Program within the Public Health and Environment Division of RTI International has an immediate opening for an Analyst with relevant experience in health policy research to assist with the conduct of public health research and evaluation projects. The primary research area for the program is evaluating the influence of public health policies, programs and interventions aimed at reducing tobacco and illicit substance use and promoting healthy behaviors. The program has a mix of NIH grants and contracts with state and federal agencies. We collaborate with state health departments, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration, and private foundations to address relevant and timely public health issues. Familiarity and experience with simulation models, and involvement and participation on successful projects (as a graduate student or after) that have led to publication are also highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Lead ongoing and new research projects with multidisciplinary team members.
  • Conduct and/or direct complex statistical/econometric analyses
  • Lead research staff on projects.
  • Prepare project reports, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and present at scientific conferences.

Director, Global Implementation Research

Location: Washington, DC

The Research Department seeks a Washington DC- based Director, Global Implementation Research to lead and provide strategic thinking for the global implementation research activities of the Foundation. He/she will report directly to the Vice President for Research and will work with colleagues throughout the Foundation to meet the Foundation’s goal of advancing research that enhances the prevention, care and treatment of Pediatric HIV/AIDS, with the ultimate mission of elimination of pediatric HIV/AIDS. He/she will provide direct technical and management support to research team members (5-7 direct reports) in addition to working closely with the Program Implementation Department to ensure smooth integration and coordination of research with program and monitoring and evaluation activities. He/she will also contribute to the Foundation’s efforts to increase the research capacity of our global staff (primarily in Africa).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the global implementation research portfolio, including research that is conducted, funded, or facilitated by the Foundation.
  • Work closely with VP of Research to develop, manage and mentor a small but rapidly growing global research team to support the Foundation’s mission.
  • Work with Foundation leadership, Country Representatives and the Research Department to determine priority areas for implementation research
  • Develop Foundation-wide research policies and procedures
  • Lead collaboration with the Foundation M&E Team to maximize use of program data to design and implement research that will contribute to global program improvement
  • Work with VP of Research to obtain new funding for Foundation priority research areas that are responsive to the needs of the field and address scientific questions of critical global importance.
  • Provide technical research oversight and support (protocol development, study implementation, data collection, analysis and interpretation, publication) to US and in-country teams
  • Oversee the monitoring of international studies to ensure compliance with all regulatory and funding requirements
  • Work with Policy and Communications to develop policies, procedures and communication strategies around Foundation research activities and results
  • Develop external research collaborations to facilitate the research that will achieve the Foundation’s mission of eliminating Pediatric HIV/AIDS

Required Qualifications

  • PhD or similar advanced degree in a relevant field (such as medicine, nursing, social science, public health)
  • Ten or more years experience conducting clinical, behavioral or implementation research in HIV/AIDS, reproductive/ maternal health, or child survival in developing country settings. Strong social science experience is a plus.
  • Experience in training, mentoring, and providing technical support to health professionals in research design, research methodologies and study implementation in developing countries, preferably in Africa

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated technical expertise in the conduct of international research in countries with limited resources
  • Demonstrated strong leadership skills with experience managing a diverse team of strong research professionals
  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and management skills
  • High level of energy and maturity with ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with competing priorities
  • Self-starter, proactive, responsible and results-oriented

Assistant or Associate Professor, Health Policy and Management

The Department of Health Policy and Management (HPM) at the Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), invites applications for two tenure-track positions at the Assistant or Associate Professor level that will contribute to the department’s research and educational programs involving the organization, financing, and delivery of health services. The department seeks candidates who have strong research expertise and interest in developing their career as funded health services research investigators. Candidates should be qualified to teach graduate-level courses in health policy and health services administration, with expertise in health economics and/or finance desirable for at least one of the positions.

Applicants should have a doctoral degree in one of the relevant social, health, or management sciences. A strong record of research publications with either a record of extramural funding, or evidence of the ability to develop such a record, is also required. Experience in teaching at the graduate level and engaging in research translation and public service is also highly desirable.

The candidate will become part of a multidisciplinary department that offers accredited MHSA, MPH, and PhD degree programs and supports a college-wide DrPH degree in public health leadership. The College of Public Health was created in 2001 with a portion of the state’s tobacco settlement funds and a public mandate to conduct education and research supporting health improvement. The department has a rapidly growing portfolio of research that includes studies in health economics, health disparities, rural health, public health delivery systems, long-term care and quality improvement. We offer a collaborative work environment and productive partnerships with the UAMS Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Related Professions as well as state health agencies, health care providers, business and law schools, and other academic institutions. Strong opportunities for collaboration exist with UAMS’ academic units and centers of excellence: the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, the Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging withseven satellite Centers on Aging spanning the state, the Stephens Spine Institute, the Psychiatric Research Institute, the Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy, and the NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Research Center. Health Economics Research Team Leader

Location: Lusaka, Zambia

The Center for Global Health and Development (CGHD) at Boston University is seeking an applied economist at the master’s or doctoral level to coordinate its research on the economics of HIV/AIDS interventions in Zambia. This is a Lusaka-based, project-funded position at the level of technical staff or assistant professor, depending on qualifications, with the potential for annual renewal depending on the availability of funding and the researcher’s performance.

Background

The CGHD at Boston University is a multidisciplinary research unit committed to improving public health and promoting social and economic development in the developing world. One of the CGHD’s largest research programs aims to understand and strengthen HIV/AIDS interventions in high-prevalence countries. In Zambia, CGHD has been evaluating the costs, outcomes, and cost-effectiveness of HIV/AIDS treatment and PMTCT programs since 2006, with support from PEPFAR. The U.S.-based PI works with a Lusaka-based research team at Boston University Center for Global Health and Development/Zambia (CGHD/Z) to implement these activities.

Responsibilities

The current opening is for a versatile economic analyst who can provide leadership to the local research team, expand local capacity in response to new opportunities, and help the PI develop new research ideas.

Responsibilities include:

  • Serve as a co-investigator or principal investigator on CGHD studies.
  • Manage the local study team, including hiring, training, and supervising researchers and data collectors.
  • Manage study implementation, including local IRB review, project finances, etc., in collaboration with CGHD/Z core staff.
  • Identify and obtain approval from potential study sites, in consultation with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders.
  • Analyze data and draft reports and manuscripts.
  • Present study and findings to local and international audiences and organize and participate in training and dissemination workshops and conferences as needed.
  • With the PI, generate and develop new ideas for using economic analysis to inform HIV/AIDS and other health programming in Zambia.
  • Participate in CGHD/Z office activities and collaborate with other CGHD/Z staff and projects as needed and appropriate.
  • Collaborate with CGHD faculty in other countries and on other projects as opportunities allow.

Requirements:

  • Master’s or doctoral degree in economics or a closely related field.
  • Technical competence in economic and statistical analysis and quantitative impact evaluation.
  • Experience in carrying out applied research and evaluation in developing country settings.
  • Experience in project management and administration.
  • Willingness to reside in Lusaka, Zambia for two years or more.
