Senior Research Associate in Health Economics (Marie Curie Palliative Care Research Unit).
Location: London, UK
Reference number: 1135644
Closing Date: 17:00 on 14 May 2010
University College London (UCL) is one of the UK’s premier universities and was recently ranked fourth in the world by the Times Higher-QS World University Rankings. The College is seeking to expand and develop its research capacity in health economics, and would like to appoint two high quality researchers who wish to further their careers in health economics in an exciting, research- focused institution.
This is a (non-clinical) senior research associate (UCL salary grade 8) post based in the Marie Curie Palliative Care Research Unit (MCPCRU, http://www.ucl.ac.uk/mental-health-sciences/specialities/marie-curie.htm in the UCL Department of Mental Health Sciences at the Royal Free Campus. The MCPCRU undertakes a wide range of research, with a focus on the development and evaluation of complex interventions in palliative care and the evaluation of innovations in end of life care service delivery. The postholder will lead economic evaluations within the MCPCRU and will be encouraged to undertake methodological work on the economics of end of life care. They will be encouraged to pursue their own research interests within health economics that are of relevance to end of life care and to submit grant proposals for research in the field of health economics. Advice and support will be given where appropriate.
Applicants should have a strong background in health economics, and preferably in cost- effectiveness analysis. Some experience in statistics, epidemiology and/or health care related research would be an advantage.
The appointment will be for two years in the first instance. Subject to satisfactory progress it is expected that the appointment will continue for a further two years.
Salary: £39,510-£46,635 (inclusive of London Allowance).

Health Economics at UCL
Both posts will form part of a growing health economics group within UCL led by Professor Steve Morris and one or two days a week will be spent within his team in the Health Care Evaluation Group at the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at UCL Bloomsbury Campus. Members of this group are drawn from across the College, and include research associates and PhD students with a range of special interest areas including conducting cost-effectiveness analyses alongside clinical trials and econometric analyses of large datasets. This will provide the postholder with excellent opportunities to interact regularly with other health economists, and the postholder will be encouraged to participate in the activities of the group. This will include contributing to seminars, writing papers with colleagues and attending health economics conferences.
