Senior Research Associate in Health Economics (UCL London Research Design Service)

Location: London, UK
Reference number: 1135290
Closing Date: 17:00 on 11 May 2010

University College London (UCL) is one of the UK’s premier universities and was recently ranked fourth in the world by the Times Higher-QS World University Rankings. The College is seeking to expand and develop its research capacity in health economics, and would like to appoint two high quality researchers who wish to further their careers in health economics in an exciting, research- focused institution.

This is a (non-clinical) senior research associate (UCL salary grade 8) post in health economics. It is a joint post in which the postholder will work in the London Research Design Service http://www.rdslondon.co.uk/index.html and PRIMENT Clinical Trials Unit http://www.priment.mrc.ac.uk/. The postholder will be based partly at the Royal Free Campus of the Department of Mental Health Sciences at UCL and partly at the PRIMENT CTU offices in Euston. The post is a combination of academic and research design work. It provides a unique opportunity for a senior researcher in health economics to develop research specific to health economic evaluations in trials and other large studies. In addition the applicant will provide expert advice to academics and clinicians who are developing proposals for funding and to provide creative academic input into their studies. The postholder will be encouraged to pursue their own research interests within health economics that are of relevance to randomised trials especially in the field of mental health. They will also be encouraged to submit grant proposals for research in the field of health economics, and advice and support will be given where appropriate.

Applicants should have a strong background in undertaking cost-effectiveness analyses, and in statistics.

The appointment will be for three years in the first instance and is supported by funding from NIHR

Salary: £39,510-£46,635 (including London Allowance).

For an informal discussion about this post, please contact either Professor Michael King m.king@medsch.ucl.ac.uk or Professor Irwin Nazareth in@gprf.mrc.ac.uk.

Further details and how to apply:

Applicants are requested to apply for this post through UCL’s online recruitment system at http://www.ucl.ac.uk/hr/jobs/. Further details about the post are also available from this website.

Health Economics at UCL

Both posts will form part of a growing health economics group within UCL led by Professor Steve Morris and one or two days a week will be spent within his team in the Health Care Evaluation Group at the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at UCL Bloomsbury Campus. Members of this group are drawn from across the College, and include research associates and PhD students with a range of special interest areas including conducting cost-effectiveness analyses alongside clinical trials and econometric analyses of large datasets. This will provide the postholder with excellent opportunities to interact regularly with other health economists, and the postholder will be encouraged to participate in the activities of the group. This will include contributing to seminars, writing papers with colleagues and attending health economics conferences.
