Location: London
Closing date: Friday 9th April, 2010

Term: 1 year full time or 2 years part time, fixed term
Applications are invited for the post of Health Economist in the Glaucoma Service of Moorfields Eye Hospital. This one year (or two year part time) post has been created to support research into glaucoma outcomes and is funded by the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.
The post holder will provide advice on health economics and statistical analysis of visual field data. Funding has been acquired to investigate the rate of disease progression of the entire cohort of patients’ visual fields tested in the Glaucoma Service at Moorfields. The visual field database represents the most comprehensive database of its kind worldwide.
Studies such as projection of the future levels of visual function during patients’ remaining lifetimes and additional investigation into the current frequency of visual field testing in glaucoma patients (current practice) in relation to the proportion of slow, moderate and fast progressors in the cohort will be performed in conjunction with other members of the Research Group. The post holder will develop evidence based clinical practice guidelines by providing health economic input and conducting decision analytic modelling.
Health economics models including estimates of the clinical and cost effectiveness of different monitoring intervals for detection of disease progression will be designed. Models of the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (e.g. QALYs) associated with implementing an optimum visual field testing regimen in comparison to current practice will be designed. Experience in developing analytical models (such as Markov models) and analysis with simulation methods with appropriate software would be desirable.
It is essential that the post holder has an MSc in Health Economics (or allied discipline) and have trained in/studied health economics. They should be a team player with excellent written and communication skills.
