Post Doctorial Research Associate Position, Fellowship in Addiction Research: University of British Columbia

Location: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Closing date: February 28, 2010

The UBC Department of Psychiatry is inviting applications for a position as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Health Evaluation and Outcome Sciences (CHEOS) supported by an award from HSBC. The Addiction Research Group at CHEOS, led by Dr. Michael Krausz, consists of an international group of interdisciplinary researchers including epidemiologists, anthropologists, psychologists, and psychiatrists. The candidate will work closely with this multi-disciplinary team and have the opportunity to experience various aspects of addiction research including surveys, service assessments, and randomized clinical trials.

The HSBC Fellowship in Addiction Research will be awarded to a post-doctoral fellow who will work with people affected by addiction and mental health problems in the Downtown Eastside and surrounding areas of Vancouver. The fellowship is also supported by a number of agencies including UBC, Providence Health Care and the LEEF Foundation. The goal of this new research group is to initiate and execute novel state of the art research on substance use disorders and related problems through a multi-disciplinary perspective. The main responsibilities of the Postdoctoral Fellow will be to participate in the implementation and completion of a number of surveys on the relationship of substance use, mental health problems and related aspects such as early adverse childhood events.

This position requires a scientist within 3 years of their PhD with advanced training in substance abuse related issues as well as experience in substance dependence related treatment and research. A combination of survey studies and clinical research experience would be optimal.

The candidate should have an interdisciplinary background with a focus on marginalized urban populations, particularly those afflicted with addiction. Training in epidemiology would be an asset. The interface of public health and clinical experience is critical to the understanding of human behaviour and health. This position requires an understanding of the individual, clinical and community aspects of substance abuse problems.

Given the nature of the research target population and the requirements of a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT), end points’ evaluation is an extreme challenge in this field. For this reason, a strong background in psychometric instruments and primary outcomes in addiction research is required. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
