Senior Health Economist: The Royal Tropical Institute (KIT)

The Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) is an independent centre of knowledge and expertise in the areas of international and intercultural cooperation. KIT Development, Policy and Practice is a department of the KIT specializing in International Health, Education, Social Development and Gender Equity and Sustainable Economic Development. It is a multidisciplinary department conducting research, post-graduate education and advisory work.

The International Health team combines expertise in health systems development, including health financing, health economics, institutional and human resource development with a programmatic focus on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, leprosy and sexual and reproductive health. Currently the economists in the team are focusing on the economics of TB/HIV, the economics of reproductive health, human resource economics, and health financing and equity. The team is looking for a senior health economist who can strengthen these areas of work and develop new areas for the future.

Main responsibilities

We are seeking an economist who can apply their skills and knowledge to the field of health. This person will work closely with a multi disciplinary team (health systems and health policy advisors, researchers, governance, HRH specialists etc) to input in the design of health systems interventions using appropriate tools and models for health financing. Examples of current work include; performance based financing, health insurance, HR costing and economic impact studies.

This position will contribute to strengthening the KIT health area programme including the following responsibilities:

  • Develop applied research programmes in the area of health economics and financing.
  • Conduct technical advisory work in the area of health economics and financing.
  • Contribute to development and implementation of post-graduate education programmes.
  • Acquisition of projects and proposal writing.

Appointment is initially for two years, with the possibility of extension.

We ask

  • Relevant academic degree in economics, health economics or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years professional experience in the area of health economics and financing in low and middle-income countries.
  • Strong publication record will also be an advantage.
  • Capacity to identify acquisition opportunities and good networking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to function well in a team.
  • Ability to travel abroad regularly.
  • Strong teaching and training skills will be an advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills in both verbal and written English and preferably one other major language.

The salary based on age, qualifications and experience, between €3.284,- and €5.130,- gross per month for a 38-hour working week. In addition, there is an 8% holiday allowance and admission to the KIT pension fund (Abp).
