Chair / Reader in Economics: University of Aberdeen Business School & Health Economics Research Unit (HERU)

Location: Aberdeen, Scotland
Closing date: 29th of January 2010

The Scottish Institute for Research in Economics (SIRE) http://www.sire.ac.uk/ is a joint research venture of the Universities of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Heriot-Watt, St Andrews, Stirling and Strathclyde supported by funding from the Scottish Funding Council. Located at the University of Aberdeen, this is a joint post between the Economics Department and the Health Economics Research Unit (HERU).

The University of Aberdeen, in conjunction with the Universities of Dundee and Stirling plays a leading role in the Work and Well-being programme, one of the three SIRE research programmes. This programme focuses on the economic and social factors that affect the health, well being and productivity of the working population. As part of its commitment to SIRE the University of Aberdeen has appointed two Full Professors and a Lecturer and is now seeking to make another senior appointment at Chair or Reader level.

The University of Aberdeen has a strong tradition of research in applied economics. The Department of Economics has a long-established expertise in health, labour and resource economics, and newly established strength in experimental economics. The Health Economics Research Unit (HERU) is one of Europe’s leading centres for research in health economics, with particular strengths in research on preference elicitation, labour markets and incentives in health care. In RAE 2008, 65% of the research submitted in Economics (UOA 34) was judged to be 3(internationally excellent) or 4(world-leading). HERU was submitted to Health Services Research (UOA 7) and the submission was judged equal first in the UK with 80% 3* or 4*.

The successful candidate will have a record of publication in leading economics journals. The focus of their research will be on either topics in health or will evidence the application of empirical and theoretical methods that can be applied to the research agenda in health. They will play a leading role in the developing collaboration between the economics department and HERU, and they will lead the Aberdeen contribution to the Work and Well-Being research programme in SIRE.

Appointment will be made at an appropriate level of Reader (Grade 8 - £44,930 - £52,086pa) or Chair dependant upon the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. The post is permanent and the start data is negotiable.
