Internship - Academic Affairs (MORE Function): Boehringer Ingelheim

Boehringer Ingelheim is currently seeking a talented and innovative Intern to join our Medical Affairs, Academic Affairs team located at our US headquarters in Ridgefield, CT. As an Intern, within Medical Affairs Outcomes Research and rEgistries (MORE) applies epidemiologic and research training to the conduct of observational research and disease state registries in Medical Affairs. The Intern is responsible for carrying out specific tasks assigned by the Director of the MORE function.
The Intern within MORE utilizes training in epidemiology, study design and comparative effectiveness research in providing support to observational research processes and projects across therapeutic areas. The Intern collaborates across BIPI functions to support the goals of specific BIPI clinical research endeavors. In doing so, the Intern gains exposure to and familiarity with the working methods of Pharmaceutical Medical Affairs research. The Intern builds working relationships with Medical Affairs staff to ensure strategic and tactical alignment of the assigned work, and to acquire valuable experience in supporting project objectives across a multifunctional team.

Responsibilities:
- Provide support to Therapeutic Areas (TAs) in the execution of Medical Outcomes Research and rEgistries (MORE) projects via the conduct of specified project tactical steps. Learn and consider cross-Therapeutic Area internal business needs and external research method and information needs to ensure MORE provides support for the creation of high quality Medical Affairs observational research and registry output. Assist in communicating processes and standards for functional area to promote technical excellence.
- Contribute to Medical Affairs projects through participation in ad-hoc Therapeutic Area project team meetings and performing specific duties as indicated. Maintain up-to-date knowledge on broad research issues and assessment trends in current therapeutic areas of focus to optimize project contributions.
- Maintain in-depth and current knowledge of the medical outcomes-related regulatory environment, local and national trends, information sources and market dynamics that could affect strategy. Identify opportunities to serve as a conduit for application of strategic and technical advances to Medical Affairs.
- Contribute to the articulation of standards for the conduct of observational research including but not limited to supporting the generation of process documents and templates, proposing resources for technical guidance, generating draft requests for proposal, and preparing reports and presentations on functionally focused design issues.
Requirements:
- Candidate for Graduate level degree (e.g. MS, MPH, PhD, DrPH, MD) in medicine, epidemiology, health service research or related field.
- Strong epidemiologic, statistical, health outcomes, health economic and scientific knowledge.
- Demonstrated analytical, decision-making and problem-solving skills; Highly developed communication skills and interpersonal proficiency. Ability to track evolving trends in a dynamic field and rapidly update accordingly. Facility for continuous learning and assimilation of new research methods.

We currently have an exciting opportunity to join the Department working on a study funded by the National Prevention Research Initiative (NPRI). This post offers an exciting opportunity to join a multi-disciplinary research team working on a novel research project to model the long-term costs and outcomes of lifestyle disease prevention interventions in primary care. The project aims to understand the potential long-term effects of interventions to modify diet and physical activity in primary care. The project will construct a model of the long-term costs and outcomes of interventions in primary care. The model will be informed by systematic literature reviews to provide evidence of intervention effectiveness. Key inputs to the model, including measures of disease occurrence, will be obtained through analysis of electronic patient records from primary care, contained in the General Practice Research Database (GPRD). A Markov model will be constructed with the aim of providing researchers and health decision-makers with estimates of the cost-effectiveness of implementing long-term pragmatic behavioural interventions to modify diet and exercise in primary care. You will contribute to systematic reviews, and analysis of GPRD data, as well as leading the development and evaluation of the disease prevention model.
You will have strong quantitative skills in health economics and/or epidemiology and/or medical statistics, experience in using statistical packages such as Stata and experience using modelling software including Excel or TreeAge, as well as excellent written and oral communication skills and experience of research. You will understand the principles of health economic evaluation and will have knowledge and experience of modelling techniques.
The research will be suitable either for candidates who wish to pursue postdoctoral research or who wish to register for a PhD. The research will be implemented in collaboration with the London School of Economics.
The post is available for three years. Starting salary will be £32,917 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
