The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is the independent organisation responsible for providing national guidance on the promotion of good health and the prevention and treatment of ill health. The assessment of novel diagnostic technologies is a new workstream at NICE. The Technical Adviser will lead on the development of methods for the evaluation of these technologies, in conjunction with internal staff at NICE and leading academics and methodologists.

Reporting to the Associate Director, the Technical Adviser is also responsible for ensuring the technical quality of the outputs of the Diagnostics Assessment Programme Team. This involves providing leadership on technical issues relating to the assessment of diagnostic technologies; reviewing and quality assuring the work of a team of technical analysts; and leading the development of high-quality methodological practice.

You will have a doctorate in a subject related to evidence-based medicine (eg critical appraisal, systematic reviewing, epidemiology, public health, etc) and are likely to have gained senior experience in an academic or health technology assessment setting. An expert in methods of guideline development, health technology assessment and/or public health research and assessment methodology, you will also have:

  • Extensive knowledge of the principles of evidence-based health care, critical appraisal and the interpretation of health care research evidence
  • Expert knowledge of one or more of the following: health economics, medical statistics, clinical trials, epidemiology or systematic reviewing
  • Thorough attention to detail and high standards of accuracy
  • High drive and determination to take ownership and resolve complex problems
