Various Positions at Health Economics Unit (HEU), University of Cape Town
Location: Cape Town, South Africa
The Health Economics Unit (HEU) is a research unit in the School of Public Health & Family Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Formally established in 1990, the Unit has worked towards strengthening capacity in health economics, management and policy through its core competencies of research, policy input and postgraduate education.
The Unit is seeking to recruit candidates with expertise in Health Economics, Health Policy or related fields, including Economics, with demonstrated knowledge of Health Systems Research, Development Economics, Development Studies, Public Finance/Policy, Politics Philosophy & Economics and Public Health specialising in Social Epidemiology.
Applicants should have experience in low-income and/or middle-income countries (preferably in Sub-Saharan Africa), and preferably have experience in working with public sector health managers at various levels of government. Excellent writing, presentation and conceptual skills are required. Applicants should be willing to travel.
Senior Researcher (Senior Lecturer Level) (Ref: 1837)
The Senior Researcher will assume a leadership role in research in the field of Health Economics & Policy, taking initiative and shared responsibility with other senior HEU staff for developing new research project protocols and for securing funding for such projects. The Senior Researcher will also develop teaching materials, lecture, supervise and/or act as module co-ordinator in the Unit’s programmes at the Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s and PhD levels.
Appointment requires:
- a PhD in an appropriate area of study or a minimum of five years’ related research experience
- teaching experience and experience in thesis supervision at Master’s level, preferably also PhD level
- an established research record as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
- at least three years’ project management experience
- experience in supervising junior researchers
- successful fund-raising experience.
Researcher (Lecturer Level) (Ref: 1838)
The Researcher will actively participate in existing research in the Unit’s portfolio and will lecture, supervise and/or act as module co-ordinator in the Unit’s programmes at the Postgraduate Diploma and Master’s levels.
Appointment requires:
- a Master’s degree in an appropriate area of study and at least two years’ research experience
- teaching experience, ideally at the postgraduate level
- a commitment to working in an academic environment, as indicated by willingness to do a PhD.

Junior Research Officer (Ref: 1839)
The Junior Research Officer will be involved in the HEU’s research activities while completing a Master’s degree on a part-time basis. Applicants with degrees in Health Economics, Health Policy or related fields, including Economics, Development Economics, Development Studies, Public Finance/Policy, Politics Philosophy & Economics and Social Epidemiology or Statistics, are encouraged.
The Junior Research Officer will support senior staff in different research projects (in fieldwork, literature review, data analysis and report writing) and will receive in-service training in research skills.
Appointment requires:
- an Honours (four-year) degree in an appropriate area of study
- a commitment to working in an academic environment, as indicated by willingness to do a Master’s degree. The annual remuneration, including benefits, for 2008 is within the range R220 000 – R260 000.
