Research Faculty Opening in Economic Evaluation of Health Programs: Center for International Health and Development, Boston University School of Public Health
Location: Boston, Massachusetts, USA
The Center for International Health and Development (CIHD) at the Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) has an opening for a health economist or general applied microeconomist with interest and experience in applied economic evaluation of health interventions in developing countries. This is a Boston-based, one-year (renewable), project-funded position at the level of assistant or associate research professor, with the potential for renewal depending on the availability of funding and the researcher’s performance.
Background: The CIHD is a multidisciplinary research unit committed to improving public health and promoting social and economic development in the developing world. It is part of the School of Public Health at Boston University and shares faculty and offices with the School’s Department of International Health. One of the CIHD’s largest research programs aims to understand and strengthen the global response to HIV/AIDS, and in particular to evaluate and improve the prevention, care, treatment, and mitigation interventions currently underway in Africa and Asia. Research activities are funded by a range of international donors, including the U.S. government (PEPFAR) through USAID and the CDC. Expansion of the CIHD’s programs in South Africa, Zambia, and other countries has created an opening for an additional research scientist to contribute to multiple studies and serve as the principal investigator for one or two.
Responsibilities: The current opening is for a versatile microeconomist or health economist who can both provide statistical and economic analysis support to study teams and take leadership on individual studies. Initial responsibilities are likely to include substantial technical involvement in studies of the costs and outcomes of AIDS treatment and prevention interventions and economic evaluation of programs aimed at improving the welfare of orphans and vulnerable children. Other responsibilities and new projects can be developed based on the researcher’s interests and abilities. The position is likely to require the researcher to spend about a quarter to a third of his or her time overseas, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa.
Requirements
- Doctoral degree in economics or a related field (e.g. public health, public policy).
- Broad technical competence in economic and statistical analysis and quantitative impact evaluation.
- Experience in carrying out applied research in developing country settings.
- A demonstrated ability to develop and implement new projects.
- Demonstrated leadership potential, resourcefulness, and intellectual creativity.
Interested candidates should send letter, CV, and one writing sample by post or e-mail to Ms. Devina Patel, Center for International Health and Development, Boston University School of Public Health, 801 Massachusetts Ave, 3rd fl, Boston, MA, 02118, USA, devina@bu.edu.

Dean, Faculty of Extension: University of Alberta
Location: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
The University of Alberta invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Faculty of Extension, with the appointment to be effective July 2009.
The University of Alberta in Edmonton is one of the top 100 public teaching and research universities in the world serving some 37,000 students with more than 14,000 faculty and staff. Founded a century ago, the university has an annual budget in excess of $1 billion and attracts more than $490 million in external research funding. It offers close to 400 undergraduate and graduate programs in 18 faculties.
The Faculty of Extension at the University of Alberta was established in 1912 “to carry the university to the people”, a mandate that continues to guide its activities. With 35 full-time academic positions, including 16 tenure-track faculty, and over 230 contract instructors, the Faculty offers more than 800 graduate, undergraduate, certificate, citation and arts and humanities life enrichment courses, seminars and workshops to approximately 16,000 continuing education students each year.
The Faculty offers a Master of Arts in Communication and Technology degree (MACT) and supports research and learning design and evaluation through the City-Region Studies Centre; the Community-University Partnership for the Study of Children, Youth, and Families; Teaching and Learning Services; and Extension Learning Solutions. The Faculty’s classroom and internet-based learning opportunities are provided through the English Language Program, Government Studies, Liberal Studies, MACT program, and Professional Programs.
Today, the Faculty continues to play a vital role within the University of Alberta as an emerging centre of excellence for the scholarship and practice of community engagement. The Faculty of Extension recently moved into Enterprise Square, a newly renovated historic building that is the site of the University of Alberta’s downtown campus. Enterprise Square also houses University of Alberta International, the Alberta School of Business Executive Education and Lifelong Learning, and many of the university’s technology transfer activities. This downtown location greatly enhances the Faculty of Extension’s engagement with the City of Edmonton, creating a vibrant atmosphere that links academic endeavors with city, business, and community groups and creates leadership opportunities for new initiatives and collaborations.
The Dean is responsible to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) for the supervision and administration of all activities of the Faculty, including the budget. Candidates must possess a wide range of expertise and skills, including: proven leadership and administrative abilities, strong academic qualifications, a demonstrated record of achievement in teaching and research, and experience in, or an understanding of, the importance of fund raising and external relations.

Experience with community/University-based research, instruction, or service would be an asset. Preference will be given to candidates who possess an earned doctorate.
