Health Economist: The Swiss Tropical Institute

The Swiss Tropical Institute is seeking to recruit a health economist to carry out research on the economic evaluation of malaria control strategies as part of the team working on simulation models of malaria epidemiology and control. Applicants should have completed /almost completed a Ph.D. in health economics, economics or a related discipline.
The position is based in Basel, Switzerland, in a highly interdisciplinary international environment and will be supported initially for 2 years, with a possibility of extension for a longer period.
The person recruited would have scope to develop and coordinate an economic research agenda within the modeling group. Areas of interest would include:
- Strengthening the link between cost-effectiveness outcomes and the simulation of scenarios for major malaria control interventions singly or combined (e.g.case management; ITNs, IRS, IPT, vaccines) applied in different epidemiological and health system scenarios;
- Assist in refining the health economics conceptual approach, sensitivity analyses, expected value of perfect information (EVPI) and related analyses of the resulting model;
- Contributing to the debate on the economic implications of malaria eradication and elimination.
Other responsibilities would include:
- Supervising doctoral students working on health economics of malaria control.
- Teaching health economics at STI.

Research Scientist: BC Cancer Agency, Cancer and Health Economics Research Program

The Cancer and Health Economics Research Program investigates a wide range of issues in health economics, services, policy and outcomes research, with a focus on cancer and cancer-related health care. The program is currently home to nine health economics/ services researchers, and has funding to double its size in the next five years.
You will lead key aspects of research projects working with a team of multidisciplinary researchers, including health economists, epidemiologists, statisticians and clinicians. You will be able to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
Specifics of your role include: conducting economic analyses of cancer screening interventions; developing decision analytic and statistical models of local cost, utilization and outcomes data (and data from the literature) to be used in economic analyses; performing systematic literature reviews; writing grant and ethics applications, as well as technical reports and contributing to articles for publication; developing a portfolio of applied and/or methodological research over time.
You ideally have Master’s degree in a related discipline (economics, statistics, epidemiology or relevant health discipline) plus at least one year of experience with health research projects. Your experience in statistical, decision analysis or econometric modelling is complemented by computer competence that includes decision analysis and statistical programs, Excel, PowerPoint and Word. Essential to the leadership aspects of your role will be effective oral/written communication, analytical, interpersonal and organizational skills, plus the ability to exercise initiative, confidentiality and judgement. Given the multiplicity of concurrent projects, adeptness at multi-tasking is important, as is accuracy and attention to detail.
The following would be desirable:
- a track record of modelling in health care decision-making and academic publication
- experience in conducting economic evaluation
- a working knowledge of health care systems in Canada.

The Marie Curie Palliative Care Research Unit, London is an established and expanding department embedded in the Department of Mental Health Sciences, UCL (Hampstead Campus).
We are seeking an enthusiastic and creative potential leader in health economics to join our friendly and multi-disciplinary research team to support and link research and service development in Marie Curie Cancer Care, focusing on enhancing the patient and carer experience of advanced progressive illness and end of life care. Applicants should demonstrate a strong background in economics, and preferably in health economics. Some experience in statistics, epidemiology and/or health care related research would be an advantage. You should have a PhD in a relevant subject area, and show evidence of a suitable publication record. A willingness and ability to work collaboratively is essential for this role.
The post-holder will lead on economic evaluations in research led by Marie Curie Palliative Care Research Unit. The post-holder will advise Marie Curie Cancer Care on economic evaluation of initiatives to enhance development and planning of its service delivery nationally. In addition, the job will include a one day per week secondment to the health economics department at London School of Economics and Political Science to enable continuing professional development, supervision and collaboration. This post will add significantly to a research department already known for its considerable output in end of life, supportive and palliative care research and its analytic productivity. It will also facilitate efficient and cost effective service innovation and maintenance of end of life care for those with cancer and other advanced chronic conditions across UK.
