The Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) is a research institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences in the centre of The Hague. The institute employs about 50 staff members, specialised in various disciplines such as demography, economy, geography, sociology, epidemiology, information management and computer science.

Since 1997 NIDI has carried out the so-called ‘Resource Flows’-project commissioned by the United Nations. The project studies global financial flows for population activities in developing countries, particularly in the area of reproductive health and HIV/AIDS. Recently, Out-of-Pocket Health Care Expenditure (OOPE) Surveys are organised and Demographic and Health Surveys are analysed to determine household spending on health care. For this project NIDI will employ an

Economist/Econometrician (m/f) full time

Tasks: The economist is project manager of the Resource Flows project. She/he is also responsible for the development of (1) innovative measurement instruments, including specialized surveys such as OOPE surveys, and (2) estimation methods. The analysis of RF data is part of the job. The researcher publishes in academic journals, writes reports for clients and project proposals for external funding.

Required: The candidate is a quantitative economist with a completed PhD. The candidate has an extensive track record of publications, and speaks and writes English fluently. She/he is a team player. Field experience in developing countries and experience in computer programming is a plus.

Conditions of employment: This position involves a temporary appointment for a period of two years. Depending on training and work experience, the maximum gross salary coming with a full-time appointment (38 hours a week) will amount to € 4.868,-, scale 12, Collective Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO – Nederlandse Universiteiten), excluding 8% holiday pay and a 6.4% year-end bonus (2009: 8.3%). We offer an extensive package of fringe benefits.
