Opportunity in Health Economics Research

Location: London, England, UK
Closing date: 21 June 2008

As a result of recent grant successes, the Health Economics and Financing Programme wishes to appoint a Research Fellow to our rapidly growing team of economists researching health problems and interventions in low income countries.

The research fellow will work on economic evaluation of three currently funded projects in West Africa:

  • Cost and cost-effectiveness of an intervention to reduce neonatal mortality through home-visits by a community health worker during pregnancy and in the first week of a newborn infant’s life (NEWHINTS) (PIs Kara Hanson and Betty Kirkwood)
  • A trial of the combined impact of intermittent preventive treatment and insecticide treaded bednets on morbidity from malaria in African children (IPTc and ITNs) (PI Brian Greenwood)
  • Effectiveness of facility based audits to improve the responsiveness of West African district hospitals to obstetric emergencies: a 3 country cluster randomised trial (Audobem; PI Matthias Borchert): this project commenced in 2007, and the post holder will take over from the previous economist who is embarking on a full time PhD.

The successful applicant will also develop new areas of research under the guidance of Professor Anne Mills. The ability to work in French is essential.

Salary will be on the Research Fellow scale (£33,518 - £38,084 pa including London weighting, as at 1 May 2008). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service, including membership of the Universities Superannuation Scheme. The post is for two years, starting as soon as possible though this is negotiable.

For further particulars and an application form, please contact The Personnel Office, LSHTM (telephone 020 7927 2203 (24 hour answer phone) or e-mail personnel@lshtm.ac.uk), quoting reference HEFP10.
