The Domestic Health Division has immediate openings for senior PhD or Masters-level researchers.
Successful applicants should be prepared to:
- Assume a lead role in business development activities for current and new clients in the federal and state governments, private organizations and foundations;
- Direct projects of varying size and complexity and manage mid and junior-level staff;
- Design policy-relevant research and analytic approaches in collaboration with clients;
- Establish themselves as experts in the field, capably present at client and professional meetings;
- Demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills and creativity.
- Communicate results in a clear and compelling manner to technical and lay audiences.
Requirements: Applicants for the Principal Associate position should possess Masters (with 15 years experience) or Doctoral degree (preferred) and 10 plus years experience. Applicants for the Senior Associate position should possess Masters (with 13 years experience) or Doctoral degree (preferred) and 8 plus years experience leading behavioral health, health policy, health economics or clinical outcomes research.
- Thorough knowledge of the behavioral health, health policy, or clinical research “industry,” providers and payers, managed care organizations, consumers and their advocates, and federal and state agencies and regulatory policy.
- Working knowledge of existing data sources such as claims and encounter data and the appropriate analytic methods and models associated with using data in policy analyses.
- Command of quantitative and qualitative research design methods.
- Experience with Medicare and/or Medicaid policy desirable.

Opportunity in Health Economics Research

As a result of recent grant successes, the Health Economics and Financing Programme wishes to appoint a Research Fellow to our rapidly growing team of economists researching health problems and interventions in low income countries.
The research fellow will work on economic evaluation of three currently funded projects in West Africa:
- Cost and cost-effectiveness of an intervention to reduce neonatal mortality through home-visits by a community health worker during pregnancy and in the first week of a newborn infant’s life (NEWHINTS) (PIs Kara Hanson and Betty Kirkwood)
- A trial of the combined impact of intermittent preventive treatment and insecticide treaded bednets on morbidity from malaria in African children (IPTc and ITNs) (PI Brian Greenwood)
- Effectiveness of facility based audits to improve the responsiveness of West African district hospitals to obstetric emergencies: a 3 country cluster randomised trial (Audobem; PI Matthias Borchert): this project commenced in 2007, and the post holder will take over from the previous economist who is embarking on a full time PhD.
The successful applicant will also develop new areas of research under the guidance of Professor Anne Mills. The ability to work in French is essential.
Salary will be on the Research Fellow scale (£33,518 - £38,084 pa including London weighting, as at 1 May 2008). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service, including membership of the Universities Superannuation Scheme. The post is for two years, starting as soon as possible though this is negotiable.
