Senior Health Economist (P4) position (HQ/08/HSS/FT282): Health Systems Financing, World Health Organization

Location: Geneva, Switzerland
Closing date: 27 April 2008

Contract Type: Fixed Term appointment for 2 years initially
Duty Station : Geneva, Switzerland

Core work will include:

  • Design, review and/or provide technical assistance on the development of costing tools to estimate the cost of implementing and scaling up health interventions, and the costs at a health facility level;
  • Lead the work project on developing and updating econometric models to estimate unit costs when this information is not available.
  • Develop, test and adapt guidelines for undertaking studies of the economic burden of disease or injury
  • Build national capacity in using appropriate tools and methods to obtain information on costs, economic impact, and intervention effectiveness and its subsequent use for priority setting.
  • Actively engage in policy dialogue with technical and policy staff in ministries of health and ministries of finance in member states, in areas of technical expertise.

Required qualifications

Education: PhD in health economics, or Medical degree with at least a Master’s degree in economics, health economics, or public health with an economics specialty.

Skills: Excellent knowledge in design, analysis and reporting of costing, resource allocation and economic burden of disease and injury. Expert and applied knowledge of econometric methods and modelling including use of statistical packages. Ability to draft, evaluate and edit scientific publications.

Experience

Essential: At least seven years of experience in costing, data management and tool development, of which at least two in an international environment. Experience in conducting facility level costing studies and analysis. Expert statistical and econometric skills. Experience in providing technical support to government officials in a variety of settings and collaboration with scientists from other organizations and in countries. Proven track record in writing and editing scientific publications and presentations of scientific research findings and methods in international fora.

Annual salary: (Net of tax)

  • 63052 USD at single rate
  • 67709 USD with primary dependants PLUS Post Adjustment.

This is currently 91.9 % of the salary but this varies due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
