Principal Associate / Project Director (Health Systems 20/20): Abt Associates, Inc.

Location: Bethesda, Maryland, USA

The Health Systems 2020 Project Director Project will provide overall direction, guidance and oversight to the project’s four “results” areas of health financing, health governance, operations, and capacity building.

Under the supervision of the IHD health systems practice leader the HS 20/20 Project Director will:

  • Oversee and guide the overall direction of the HS 20/20 project
  • Represent the project to the USAID Cognizant Technical Officer (CTO) team, other USAID clients, other cooperating agencies, development partners, and external audiences
  • Preside over the project’s senior management team that sets the overall direction for the project
  • Oversee and contribute to planning and reporting on project activities
  • Oversee project finances
  • Promote and market the project to global and field clients
  • Oversee, promote, and participate in the project’s quality assurance process
  • Lead strategic technical assistance and applied research assignments for field- and Washington-based clients
  • Serve as a resource to project personnel on issues in his/her area of technical expertise

Skills/Knowledge Required:

  • Doctoral or Master’s Degree in a health systems-related discipline, such as public health, public policy, economics, business, or political science
  • 10-20 years of professional, relevant experience, including leadership of a multi-faceted, multi-year project
  • Demonstrated experience in developing countries, preferably related to USAID-funded projects or activities funded by other international assistance organizations
  • Demonstrated experience in presenting health systems issues to policy makers in Ministries of Health and high level representatives of development assistance organizations
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to travel overseas on short-term assignments
  • Written and oral proficiency in English and one of the following: Spanish, French, Arabic, Portuguese, Russian
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and participate in teams that cut across disciplines, including political science/governance, organizational development/capacity building, financial management/accounting, and public health planning and administration
  • Publication record in peer-reviewed journals in area of expertise in health systems desired
