Monash University is seeking to appoint as a professorial director of health economics a dynamic, entrepreneurial academic leader, with research, policy-setting and consulting experience relating to the broad discipline of health economics. As Professor and Director of the Centre for Health Economics, the appointee will ensure further development of the size, scope and impact of the centre.
The Director will be located in new premises in the strategic research precinct of Monash’s Clayton campus and will report to the Deputy Dean, Faculty of Business and Economics. The new location for the centre is providing opportunities for stronger links with related disciplines such as economics, econometrics, business statistics, medicine, nursing and health sciences.
The Centre for Health Economics is comprised of a large, independent group of health economists which has been seen as a centre of excellence in health economics research and teaching. The group has an established track record in gaining competitive research grants and consultancy work. Its members publish original research in health economics and have made a significant contribution to debate and policy development in the healthcare sector.
The appointee will perform an important leadership role as manager of the centre and leader of the research and consulting activities. He or she will promote and develop the research strengths of the group and contribute to the established graduate and undergraduate teaching programs in health economics. The appointee will be expected also to lead the team within the centre in the development of strategic initiatives in research and consultancies that will strengthen the centre’s reputation and role in health policy research and extend its links with research collaborators and funders within Australia and internationally.
The appointee will make a distinguished contribution to the activities of relevant professional bodies locally, nationally and internationally. He or she will maintain and strengthen links with regional government and non-government organisations, professional associations and other relevant organisations. The director will participate as required in the faculty and university administrative tasks.
The successful applicant will possess a research doctorate in a relevant discipline or equivalent research achievements; an international reputation for outstanding health economics research; a record of obtaining external grants for research and in successful supervision of post-graduate research students; proven excellence in teaching; highly developed skills of leadership, networking and management. He or she will have a strong track record in building appropriate linkages with both government and industry.
Responsibilities
Specific duties include:
- Provision of scholarly leadership in the field of health economics.
- Management of the sustainability of the centre through continued research grants, consulting and teaching.
- Fostering the research of individuals within the centre and within the discipline.
- Participation in and provision of leadership in community affairs, particularly those related to the discipline, in professional, commercial and industrial sectors where appropriate.

A competitive remuneration package will be negotiable for an outstanding appointee. Relocation travel, removal and temporary housing assistance will be negotiable for an interstate or overseas appointee.
