Senior Health Economist / Health Economist: The Milken Institute

Location: Santa Monica, California, USA

Ideal Candidate will have:

  1. Ph.D. in health economics with seven years of experience or Masters with a minimum of 10 years, with undergraduate or other Masters in operations research, statistics or related field.
  2. Applications in chronic disease economics and knowledge of economic evaluation such as cost-of-illness studies, cost-benefit studies and cost-effectiveness analysis.
  3. Knowledge in the latest prevention, early detection and innovations in treatment of chronic disease.
  4. Candidate must have detailed knowledge of public data bases related to chronic disease such as NHIS, MEPS, NHANES, BRFSS and others. Use of sub-national data is desirable.
  5. Experience in projecting health care spending under different demographic/cohort and policy regimes far into the future.
  6. Statistical estimation and model building including econometrics using statistical software (i.e. SAS, STATA, Eviews, Aremos, SPSS) and be able to supervise maintaining, organizing, and updating large data sets.
  7. Detailed knowledge of economic and statistical concepts.
  8. Good written and oral communication skills.
  9. An interest in working in team environment under pressure.

The Milken Institute is expanding its research capabilities in health economics. This is an outstanding opportunity to participate in translational health economics research that will be put into action to influence public policy and improve health outcomes. In collaboration with our sister organization, FasterCures, we aim to conduct research that fosters the movement of innovative treatments and cures from the bench to the bedside.

We are seeking a candidate with a Ph.D. in health economics and strong knowledge of operations research, econometrics, biometrics or other advanced quantitative techniques along with seven or more years of experience. A Masters Degree with a minimum experience of 10 years of experience will be considered. Experience background in at least two areas including: university, think tank, government or industry (biopharmaceuticals a plus) is required. Published research in the area of chronic disease economics is essential. Knowledge in methods of economic evaluation such as of cost-of-illness studies, cost-benefit studies and cost-effectiveness analysis are important. Candidate must have detailed knowledge of public data bases related to chronic disease such as NHIS, MEPS, NHANES, BRFSS and others, plus familiarity of with private data bases. Use of sub-national data is desirable. Knowledge of prevention/early detection strategies and the latest innovations in the treatment of chronic diseases is a plus. Experience in projecting health care spending under different demographic/cohort and policy regimes far into the future. Position will work with department head and other senior research staff in conducting sponsored research studies and support development outreach efforts. Statistical estimation including econometrics using statistical software (i.e. SAS, STATA, Eviews, Aremos, SPSS) and be able to supervise maintaining, organizing, and updating large data sets. Other requirements are a detailed knowledge of economic and statistical concepts, experience in generating charts and tables in Excel, PowerPoint, and Access, possess good written and oral communication skills and have an interest in working under pressure in a team environment.

The National Collaborating Centre for Nursing and Supportive Care (NCC-NSC) is commissioned by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to develop national clinical guidelines for the NHS in England and Wales. The NCC-NSC is hosted by the Royal College of Nursing and involves a partnership between a number of academic, patient and professional organisations.

This is a great opportunity to join an established team working on clinical guidelines at a national level, having a direct impact on healthcare professionals and improving the quality of patient care. You will benefit from being part of an academic community for peer support and professional development, collaborating with colleagues at NICE and at the Health Economics Research Centre at the University of Oxford.

As a member of the technical team within the NCC-NSC, working closely with the Senior Health Economist, you will support the identification and analysis of economic evidence in the development of NICE-commissioned national clinical guidelines. As a graduate with a postgraduate qualification in health economics or an equivalent field, you will have good knowledge and experience of the application of health economic methods, research methods and project management, together with strong communication and team-working skills. A good knowledge of clinical guideline development processes including information searching, critical appraisal and systematic review methods would be advantageous.
