Economist: PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative (MVI)

Overview: The mission of the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative (MVI) is to accelerate the development of promising malaria vaccines and ensure their availability and accessibility in the developing world. MVI works with researchers, companies, governments, and partner organizations to accomplish its mission.

MVI intends to further strengthen its ability to analyze the cost and financial implications of future malaria vaccines, in parallel with each vaccine’s development and clinical trial processes. MVI will assist early planning to inform national and international decisions on the appropriate role of eventual vaccines.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Liaise with MVI and PATH staff and collaborators working on the research and development of vaccine candidates so that economics inform product development activities.
  • Design/implement/manage projects on policy, economics and financing of malaria, immunization and/or malaria vaccines.
  • Design/implement/manage economic evaluations of malaria vaccine candidates in coordination with clinical trials.
  • Collaborate closely with partner organizations and institutions in the developing and developed worlds.
  • Document lessons learned through economic evaluations in publications and reports.
  • Contribute economics perspective to MVI communications materials.
  • Develop content related to economic evaluation to concept papers and proposals for MVI.
  • Develop consultations and workshops on economics of malaria vaccines.
  • Represent MVI domestically and internationally.
  • International and domestic travel up to 30% of the time.

Qualifications: The successful candidate for this position will have global health experience, ideally in the economic analysis of malaria or immunization interventions in the public sector of developing countries; She/he will have:

  • Doctoral level degree in economics or equivalent in experience.
  • At least 8 years of relevant experience, including at least 2 years experience as an economist, with majority of that experience focused on developing countries.
  • Extensive experience working with public health programs at country, regional and global levels.
  • Experience collaborating with officials in bilateral and multilateral agencies on economics issues.
  • Extensive experience in the design and implementation of economic evaluations for public health interventions and technologies, ideally in the context of clinical trials.
  • Experience with modeling of economic or public health data.
  • An understanding of developing country government and donor financial processes, particularly as they relate to decision-making and use of health resources.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills, especially Excel and Power Point.
  • Proven ability to work in a team structure.
  • Fluency in English required; command of French ideal; bilingual English-French preferred.
