Volunteers to help with on-line education in Health Economics for low- and middle-income countries: The Peoples-uni

The Peoples-uni aims to provide educational context around the increasing amount of Open Education Resources freely available on the Internet to help with Public Health capacity building in low- and middle-income countries. A paper in the December 2007 issue of the Bulletin of WHO describes the genesis of the initiative](http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/85/12/07-044388.pdf) [PDF] and you can see a draft course module on Maternal Mortality at http://moodle.cawd.net/course/view.php?id=2 .

To keep costs low, this depends largely on volunteers. High priority is to offer a course module on Health Economics.

What help is needed:

We are not necessarily looking for long-term commitment. The success of the initiative will depend on the professional generosity of those who share a desire to help build capacity to improve Public Health in countries where health problems abound (although we do believe that there are benefits to all participants). Only short-term and time-limited commitment is sought, at this stage. We seek volunteers from both ‘north’ and ‘south’.

Course developers (either lead or team members)

What will this involve? Join team and collaborate on the development of a course module – this is based on a template we will provide. We already have access to a number of on-line resources that might be used. This can all be achieved by e-communication.

On-line facilitators

General facilitators who commit for the length of the course module (10-12 weeks) – you would need approximately 2-3 hours a week during the course. ‘Content experts’ who will commit for just a two-week spell as facilitator for one topic – this would be a topic within the course module in which you have special interest and expertise.

Assignment markers ( we are working with the UK Royal Society of Health to develop a system for assessment and awards)

Timetable: We hope to offer new course modules in September 2008, and to have draft course modules available by June/July 2008.
