Health Economist - Research Assistant: Department of Social Medicine, University of Bristol

Location: Bristol, England, UK

Applications are invited for a keen health economist to join a research team working on systematic reviews and economic modelling of diagnostic tests. This is a new research assistant position to join a group of four health economists within the Department of Social Medicine, (awarded the top 5* grade in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise). The post is offered full-time, for 18 months.

You will be responsible for developing the economic decision analysis model alongside two nationally-funded systematic reviews. The first review, which will be conducted jointly with the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD) at the University of York, evaluates the diagnostic performance and cost-effectiveness of colour vision testing in identifying and monitoring the progression of diabetic retinopathy. The second review examines the diagnostic accuracy and cost-effectiveness of CT and MRI for distinguishing between vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The primary task for this post is to develop, through literature reviews and discussions with clinical members of the study team, the structure of the economic models. Based on this structure, you will identify the key parameters of the model and liaise with the systematic reviewers to identify the best primary studies on parameters such as sensitivity, specificity, costs and therapeutic effectiveness. Using appropriate software, you will develop, de-bug, validate and interpret the cost-effectiveness results of the probabilistic model.

If successful, you may be appointed either on a fixed term or a permanent contract depending on the extent of your previous relevant research experience. Further information can be found at http://www.bristol.ac.uk/personnel/ftc/
