Applications are invited for a PhD studentship (jointly funded by the Medical Research Council and the Health Foundation, for three years) with Prof Cam Donaldson, Health Foundation Chair in Health Economics, and Dr John Wildman, Reader in Health Economics, in the development of new econometric approaches to investigate causes and consequences of health inequalities. For further particulars, including an application form, contact Anita Tibbs. For informal discussion, contact either Prof Donaldson or Dr Wildman.

The value of the studentship includes a maintenance award at least at standard Research Council rates for a single individual and payment of University tuition fees. In addition, as the studentship progresses, there may be opportunities to work on research topics relevant to the thesis topic and designated by the supervisor to whom the student is attached as well as in teaching.

Candidates should have an undergraduate degree in economics or social sciences at the 2:1 level (or be expected to achieve this grade) and (or be about to complete) a Masters degree in Economics, Health Economics or other relevant social science. The PhD thesis topic will be in the field of health inequalities. The focus will be on development of new econometric approaches to investigate the causes of health inequalities and, in particular, the relationship between health and income.

The successful candidate will work with the Economics of Safety, Health, Environment and Risk (ESHER) research group which is part of the Institute of Health and Society and the Business School. You can find out more about ESHER at http://www.ncl.ac.uk/pahs/research/services/economics/.

The deadline for applications is 15th April 2007. Further particulars can be obtained from Anita Tibbs (anita.tibbs@ncl.ac.uk). An application form, CV (with names of two referees) and statement of interests and motivation should be sent to Anita Tibbs.
