The fellowship is funded by a grant from Hoffman-La Roche Limited. This is a unique opportunity for a person who has just completed a doctorate in health economics or a related quantitative discipline to gain practical experience of economic evaluation methods as applied to medicines and other medical technologies. The learning objectives of the fellowship will be set in discussion with the supervisor. The mode of learning will be active collaboration with researchers in CEM on a variety of methodologic and applied questions in economic evaluation. A major focus will be on developing quantitative methods in the areas of both decision/disease modelling and trial-based evaluation. On-going methodologic research at CEM includes techniques for analysis of uncertainty in cost-effectiveness data and use of contingent valuation for cost-benefit analysis. The fellowship will be based at CEM, St. Joseph's Hospital, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. CEM was established in 1993 and comprises multidisciplinary faculty and staff with primary appointments in the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and Department of Medicine at McMaster University. CEM research projects are grant-funded from peer-reviewed agencies such as Medical Research Council, government and industry. The fellowship carries a generous stipend with a small fund toward travel expenses. The fellowship is full time, commencing July 1, 1998 (or as soon thereafter) for 2 years, and is not intended for candidates who have not yet completed their doctoral studies. Application: A letter of application, explaining career goals and why the candidate is suited to this fellowship, should be accompanied by a copy of their curriculum vitae and letters of support from three referees, familiar with their recent academic work. Applications should be received no later than June 1, 1998. Mailing Address: Bernie O'Brien, PhD, Centre for Evaluation of Medicines, St. Joseph's Hospital, 50 Charlton Avenue East, H-329, Hamilton, Ontario. The mailing list for this posting was slightly out of date, so some may have been sent to past addresses. If you have sent in a change of address recently to iHEA, this has been updated, so there is no need to send another change of address to the association. If you do not receive a Call for Abstracts by mid-May, please contact the Conference Secretariat at ihea-99@forum.svdu.eur.nl or go to the iHEA web page at http://www.healtheconomics.org and submit your request from there. The appointment is designed to strengthen those aspects of the research programme which benefit from an economic perspective, particularly in the area of economic evaluation. The successful candidate will contribute to the existing research programme and continue to develop their own research in collaboration with members of the Department. The post holder will also teach undergraduate medical students and contribute to the MSc in Health Research Methods. The successful candidate will have a postgraduate qualification in economics or health economics and relevant research experience. The post is offered for five years in the first instance. Further details are available from the Personnel Office, University of Bristol, Senate House, Bristol BS8 1TH (tel. 0117-925 6450). Closing date: Tuesday 12th May 1998 JOB DESCRIPTION Lecturer in Health Economics The University of Bristol Department of Social Medicine conducts teaching and research in aetiological epidemiology, health services research, and public health medicine. The skills of a variety of health care researchers including statisticians, epidemiologists, sociologists, psychologists, anthropologists, health economists, public health physicians and nurses, are available and contribute to the excellent working environment in which to undertake interdisciplinary research and teaching. The Department comprises some 80 staff. The Department has its own library and excellent computer facilities. The Department has been selected to host the main centre of the Medical Research Council's Health Services Research Collaboration. There are extensive collaborations with many clinical and other departments in the University of Bristol, throughout the UK and internationally. The Department contributes to teaching on the undergraduate degree For medical students, and runs a number of courses for postgraduate students, research staff and public health medicine trainees. An MSc course in Health Research Methods will begin in the near future. Research is informed by the principle that the pattern of disease in populations and the benefits of health care can best be understood through interdisciplinary enquiry combining an interest in biological mechanisms, the epidemiological/statistical investigation of population distributions, an appreciation of the social and cultural aspects of illness, investigation of the effectiveness of treatments, and a concern with resources and policy. The exiting research programme in the Department is concerned with two broad areas: Health Services Research, which includes research into all aspects of health care technology and the delivery of health care. HSR is becoming increasingly important in providing reliable information on which to base decisions on the allocation of limited resources, decisions which may well have an ethical component. A priority is to develop trial methodology to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of treatments. This programme is expanding with the establishment of the new MRC Health Services Research Collaboration. Aetiological Epidemiology, in particular, lifecourse epidemiology - the ways in which exposures at different stages of the lifecourse interact to produce patterns of chronic disease. Until recently, studies of this sort have been almost exclusively concerned with the effect of factors acting in adult life but attention has recently turned to the long term influences of factors operating in the intra-uterine and early post-natal period. Lecturer in Health Economics The Department of Social Medicine is seeking to appoint a health economist to play a key role within the research programme with an emphasis on the conduct of economic evaluations alongside clinical trials being run within the Department. There are considerable opportunities for addressing methodological issues in economic evaluation. In addition to economic evaluation, health economists are currently working on issues as diverse as the evaluation of total purchasing schemes, the economics of antibiotic resistance and the citizen's utility function, using a variety of methods. As well as contributing to ongoing studies, the successful candidate will be encouraged to continue developing their own research programme in collaboration with members of the Department. A commitment to teaching is essential, and the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision, including the planned MSc course. The post holder will also be expected to advise researchers within and outside the Department on research methodologies relevant to their expertise. The post holder will have completed postgraduate training in health economics, have experience of designing and conducting their own research, achieving publications from such studies and of securing research funding. All new lecturing staff joining the University attend a part-time Teaching and Learning Programme. This provides, on a modular basis, a practical introduction to teaching in Higher Education. The course is formally accredited by the University's School of Education. Although further details will be provided on appointment, informal enquiries about the programme are welcome: please contact Staff Development. The post will be on the Lecturer A/B scale and is offered for five years in the first instance. Professional and Managerial Accountability will be to the Head of Department. The terms and conditions of employment will be those for the Academic Staff of the University and the Standing Orders of Council Governing the Appointment of Members of the Non-Professional Academic Staff. The University does not issue application forms. Applications should be made by letter, stating special academic and research interests, and include the names, addresses and, if possible, telephone numbers of three referees. The letter should be accompanied by a curriculum vitae, setting out date of birth and, in chronological order, details of university and subsequent career with qualifications, previous appointments and publications. Applications should be sent to the Personnel Office (EO), University of Bristol, Senate House, Bristol BS8 1TH, quoting reference number 4699, by the closing date of Tuesday 12th May 1998. Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact Joanna Coast (0117 928 7213; jo.coast@bristol.ac.uk) or Tim Peters (0117 928 7207; tim.peters@bristol.ac.uk) for informal discussions. ------------------------------------ BRITISH COLUMBIA MEDICAL ASSOCIATION The British Columbia Medical Association (BCMA), a professional organization representing the medical profession, has a permanent position available for a highly motivated individual seeking an exciting and challenging opportunity in the health care field.
