JOHN D. THOMPSON PRIZE for Young Investigators
CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
Nominations are being sought for the 1999 John D. Thompson Prize for
Young Investigators, which recognizes young investigators based on their
contribution to the research literature in the field of health services.
The Prize consists of an honoraria and travel expenses to the 1999 Annual
Meeting. Funds donated by the Health Administration press and the many
friends of John D. Thompson form the Prize's endowment.
The Prize is awarded to an individual whose work may be in any discipline
contributing to knowledge in the health services. Emphasis is placed on
the applicant's publications in peer reviewed scholarly journals. The
judges may also consider books and other publications. Nominees should
have received their Ph.D. within the last 5 years. Anyone may nominate
a candidate. A nomination should include a current curriculum vitae on
the candidate, a single letter of not more than five pages discussing the
candidate's contribution and justifying the nomination, and complete
copies of the candidate's publications of which the nominee is sole or
first listed author. These must appear in print before December 31,
1998. Individuals may be nominated more than once.
If you intend to nominate a candidate for this Prize, please contact
Lydia Reed at AUPHA as soon as possible to receive additional
information. Final nominations must be received by April 2, 1999.

Exploring the Health Frontier: The Effect of Reform Initiatives on
Canadian Health and Health Care

August 19-21, 1999
The biennial CHERA/ACRES conference is an opportunity to highlight
Research done in Canada and abroad in the area of health economics and
Health services research. We invite you to submit abstracts for oral
or poster presentation on the impact of health reform in the following
areas:
(1) patients and physicians and the delivery, utilization and costs of
medical services;
(2) the delivery, utilization, costliness and quality of: (a) general
acute hospital care , (b) long term care, (c) home care, (d)
community care and (e) mental health care;
(3) the organizational structure and behaviour of provincial and
sub-regional health care delivery systems;
(4) the determinants of health;
(5) the financing of health care delivery systems;
(6) population health as reflected by changes in the health status of the
nation, provinces, sub-regions or groups of individuals;
(7) the availability, costliness, affordability and accessibility of
prescription drugs; and
(8) the long run economic viability of the Canadian health care system.
The eight general areas listed above are far from definitive. The Program
Committee will consider abstracts on other themes which are of interest
to health care economists and health service researchers. The organizers
are also considering a session on the issue of health research
dissemination in Canada. Submissions in this area will be considered
for a special session now under development.
The Program Committee will also consider proposals for directed sessions
consisting of related papers.
Graduate students are welcome to submit their papers to this competition.
Authors will receive confirmation of acceptance or refusal by May 15,
1999.
Abstract submissions will be accepted by e-mail, e-mail attachment, fax
or mail. You can use the on-line form found on the CHERA/ACRES web page
(http://www.healtheconomics.org/chera), or send the abstract in your
chosen format, using the following guidelines:
- Abstracts should not exceed 250 words

INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON NATIONAL HEALTH ACCOUNTS
Call for Abstracts
June 4-5, 1999
The International Health Economics Association (iHEA), in
collaboration with the USAID funded Partnerships for Health Reform
(PHR) Project, will sponsor an International Symposium on National
Health Accounting (NHA), June 4-5, 1999 at the World Trade Center,
Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The Symposium will precede the iHEA
Second World Conference June 6-9. Symposium participants are
encouraged to attend both meetings. Dr. Peter Berman, Senior NHA
Advisor at the PHR Project and Associate Professor at the Harvard
School of Public Health, will chair the Symposium.
A portion of the Symposium will consist of invited oral presentations
and poster sessions selected from abstracts submitted. We hereby
invite abstracts for oral and poster presentations. The abstract must
relate to the topics outlined below. All oral presentations will be
in English, but poster presentations can be in any language.
ABSTRACTS ARE DUE BY FEBRUARY 1, 1999.

1999 Academy of Business & Administrative Sciences (ABAS) International
conference will be held July 12-14, 1999 in Barcelona, Spain. The theme

of Health and Health Care

Cornell University's Sloan Program in Health Administration is seeking

Faculty Position in Health Services Management
We are seeking a tenured or tenure track faculty member to provide
teaching, research and leadership in both our Graduate Program in Health
Services Administration and the development of our Health Services
Research effort. Applicants should have a doctorate in health services
management, health policy, or in a closely related field like applied
economics, management, or social psychology.
The successful applicant will be expected to have excellent teaching
skills, with preference given to persons with teaching experience at the
graduate level. Applicants should have, or demonstrate the ability and
commitment to establishing, a very strong research portfolio including
funded research. In addition, experience in the health services field,
either management or policy, is viewed as very favorable.
The person filling this position will be asked to contribute leadership
to the Graduate Program in Health Services Administration in areas
additional to teaching and research. Those areas include but are not
limited to, program development and executive education. Teaching at
both graduate and undergraduate level, student advisement; serving on
departmental, college, and university committees, and providing
professional and community service are all required.
The teaching and research expertise of the person filling the position
is open but must be consistent with health services administration
education and health services research. Preference will be given to
candidates whose areas of research are complementary to the research
programs of existing Policy Analysis and Management faculty.
Particularly encouraged to apply are persons with expertise in one or
more of the following areas, operations and production management,
quantitative decision making, outcomes research, managerial finance, and

The Research Triangle Institute's Center for International Development
is seeking to fill the position of Health Finance Specialist. The
successful candidate will:
* Lead small teams composed of colleagues, collaborators, and host
country professionals to analyze health finance issues and build local
capacity in financial analysis and advocacy skills on health and family
planning finance topics.
* Conduct costing, cost-effectiveness, cost-benefit, demand, and
market segmentation analyses related to health services in developing
countries.
* Study alternative financing mechanisms, including user fees,
third-party insurance, national insurance schemes, and private-sector
contracting, for provision of essential reproductive health services in
developing counties.
* Collaborate in demographic, health, population, and family
Planning research and technical assistance in developing countries.
* Give convincing and cogent presentations on population and health
policy topics to a broad spectrum of audiences, ranging from
nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) to high level officials.
* Write proposals and investigate funding opportunities.
The successful candidate will have a PhD, MA, MBA, or other advanced
degree in finance, economics, business, or other finance-related
specialty. The candidate must also have international experience,
preferably in developing countries; strong quantitative and oral
communications skills; willingness to travel internationally 30-40% of
the time; and strong computer skills. The candidate must be a team
player and team leader, and fluency in another language highly desirable.
Salary will be dependent on experience and documented salary history.

The Modeling Division in the Center for Cost and Financing Studies has an
opening for a Ph.D. in economics or a related field interested in conducting
applied policy research related to the U.S. health care system. Both new
and recent Ph.D. recipients are encouraged to apply. The successful
candidate will be part of a team of economists that conduct
investigator-initiated research on the economic impact of health policies
resulting in publication in leading economics, health policy and health
services research journals. Primary responsibilities will include
conducting self-directed research in the economics of health care-including
(but not limited to) studies of access and utilization, health care
expenditures and financing, private and public health insurance, and tax and
subsidy analysis related to health care. In addition, the candidate will
contribute to the analytical design of the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey,
an ongoing series of large, complex, multimillion dollar surveys of
households, employers, and health care providers.
The candidate should have strong research potential with excellent
quantitative research skills in microeconomics and econometrics. In
addition, applicants should ideally have experience using large, complex
surveys, as well as effective oral and written communication skills. We will
be interviewing candidates at the ASSA meetings in New York. For
