FIRST ASIA & PACIFIC HEALTH ECONOMICS FORUM
and the initiation of the Asia & Pacific Health Economics Network
The Centre for Health Economics at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok,
Thailand, in collaboration with the World Health Organization and other
Agencies, will organize the first Asia and the Pacific Health Economics
Forum on March 19-20, 1998 to commemorate the Fiftieth Anniversary of
the World Health Organization (WHO). This forum aims to stimulate
researchers, health administrators, and international funders to be aware
of the increasing needs for health economics capacity building and to
promote links and networking in the field of health economics.
The Forum will be regarded as an initial step towards creating formal
links within Asia and the Pacific, and with other national and
international networks in fields related to health economics.
The WHO Collaborating Centre for Health Economics at Chulalongkorn
University plans to establish a Health Economics Network for Asia and the
Pacific. This will link researchers, health administrators, and academicians
in the field of health economics so that experiences and ideas can be shared
both internationally and nationally, intra- and inter-network. The hope is to
establish partnerships with other networks relating to Health Economics issues

SHORT COURSE IN HEALTH ECONOMICS
In October 1997 The Department of Public Health & Policy at the
London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Department of
Social Policy & Administration at The London School of Economics
are to offer a programme of short courses in Health Economics.
These courses are aimed at decision makers, clinical and non-clinical,
working in health services. The two departments have international
reputations for teaching with both obtaining the highest ratings in
the Government's recent research assessment exercise.
The programme is designed so that individuals can meet their individual
needs, by allowing flexibility in the way in which courses can be
combined and in the sequence in which a training can be acquired.
Courses are available to those with no previous experience of economics
but also allow those with experience to develop their knowledge.
A training in health economics will inform the debate about how to
maximise the benefits from available resources, will allow participants
to appreciate better the dynamics of the industry in which they work and
improve their understanding of the financial and regulatory framework
that shapes it. They will obtain a greater understanding of the production
process of health care goods and services, the demand for services and the
impact of health care services upon the health status of the population.
An understanding of Health Economics is becoming more important for those
who work within, and manage, health services. This programme offers
participants a unique opportunity to obtain a high quality training.
Financial support, as bursaries from the NHS Executive, are available to
those employed in the UK NHS. These courses are acredited for Continuing
Medical Education (CME). For further information and application forms
