Presentation: This laboratory course offers an analytical overview of the theory and practice of productive efficiency and consumer choice in the health care sector. Both conceptual and methodological issues will be addressed. The course focuses on stochastic frontier analysis and discrete choice models. The students will have the opportunity of applying these models to several data sets and acquire the required econometric skills to initiate their own research in the related topics. A selection of empirical studies in health economics will be discussed.

Objectives: At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  1. Use econometric approaches with cross-sectional and panel data for measuring productive and scale efficiency of health care providers as well as modelling the choices of health care consumers.
  2. Assess the appropriate use of statistical approaches given the data and the setting of the problems and understand the advantages and disadvantages of different model specifications, functional forms and econometric approaches.

The course is part of the a series of six modules offered as the International PhD Programme in Health Economics and Policy intended for PhD students who are wishing to enhance their specific knowledge and sharpen their capabilities in the field of health economics and policy.
