The Sloan Program prepares future leaders in health care administration to manage health care institutions and to assess how government policies and programs affect the health care sector of the economy and the institutions they manage. The Sloan Program does this through education that is informed by research that addresses the challenges of the dynamic and changing health administration environment. The career trajectory for Sloan graduates is excellent. Sloan graduates serve in leadership positions in a variety of settings including hospitals, long-term care, ambulatory services, insurance/benefits organizations, pharmaceuticals, management consulting, professional associations and government organizations.
The Sloan MHA Program is located in the Department of Policy Analysis and Management (PAM) in the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University. Policy and management issues are interrelated across the public and private sectors around the issues of cost, quality, and access to health services. Faculty in the Department of Policy Analysis and Management address these issues through their teaching and research. As a department, PAM prepares students for leadership positions as managers, policy makers, and analysts for careers in both the public and private sectors. As stated by Dr. Patsy Brannon, Dean of Human Ecology: "The Sloan Program capitalizes on its location in the Department of policy analysis and Management to train leaders in health care administration who can manage health care institutions as well as analyze, evaluate and assess how governmental policies and programs will impact the health care sector and the institutions they manage." As Dr. Richard Burkhauser, Chair of PAM further notes, the Program has a "strong business core and Sloan students are learning how to work well in environments that combine elements of both the public and private sectors." Graduate students in health administration are encouraged to take PAM electives, as well as electives throughout Cornell University, including the renowned programs in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations, Johnson Graduate School of Management, the School of Hotel Administration, and Applied Economics and Management.
In contrast with many health management programs where health applications are delayed to the second year, in the Sloan Program the focus on health administration concepts begins during the first semester. The M.H.A. degree in health administration accordingly is highly focused, dealing with the issues and challenges specific to the health industry. The core curriculum combines a solid foundation in accounting, finance, management and economics-the fundamentals of management and business methods-with specific training and skills needed to apply these fundamentals successfully in the health industry. Course requirements and electives provide a broad approach to management training in health care, including offerings in ethical and humanitarian principles, entrepreneurial innovation, leadership skills development, epidemiology, health law, insurance and managed care, social and health policy issues, and health care financing and economics. In short, the Sloan Program's two-year curriculum equips graduates to work in the health services area of their choice.
