Members of CEEID are involved in the teaching and management of an M.Sc. in the 'Control of Infectious Diseases'. The objectives of this course are to (i) assess constraints of local public health delivery systems (ii) manage available resources to effect control (iii) investigate the transmission of endemic and epidemic infections (iv) select appropriate methods of control (v) design, implement and evaluate co-ordinated control interventions. Students may concentrate their efforts on particular geographical regions , or individual countries, or on specific diseases, whether viral, bacterial or parasitic. Students have the opportunity of studying an intervention programme with up to two months spent in a suitable location overseas or in Britain.

This stream: provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to improve the health of populations, communities and particular groups within them. The focus is mainly on the more industrialised countries. The emphasis is on the use, development and critical evaluation of conceptual models, evidence and methods of analysis, and on practical, effective interventions. Graduates from this stream work in health care, health policy and public health organisations at local, national and international level in service and academic public health roles.

By the end of this stream students should be able to demonstrate ability to apply knowledge of the core disciplines of public health, consisting of statistics; epidemiology; health economics; and social research, to real world health problems. In addition, they should be able to (i) critically assess key public health functions; (ii) demonstrate knowledge and skills in a range of topics related to public health; (iii) formulate, implement and evaluate appropriate policy responses to public health problems, and (iv) show competence in critically evaluating and communicating research evidence.

This stream provides a foundation for research and practice in environment and health. Awareness of the potential health effects of environmental exposures is growing among scientists, policy-makers, the media and the public. This is reflected particularly in the increasing volume of public and academic debates related to aspects such as the health hazards of chemical contamination of land, air, the rivers and seas and the impact on health of air pollution. These issues are among those addressed in this stream. Multidisciplinary training is provided in the advanced methods necessary to undertake epidemiological research on the relationships between health and the environment, and to develop an understanding of the social, economic and political contexts which underlie the establishment of priorities, and the selection and evaluation of policy responses. Graduates from this course go into careers in epidemiology, health risk assessment, consultancy or policy development as applied to environment and health.

By the end of this stream students should be able to demonstrate ability to apply knowledge of the core disciplines of public health, consisting of statistics; epidemiology; health economics; and social research, to real world health problems. In addition, they should be able to: (i) describe the principal concerns in environment and health (pollution of air, water, and land; the urban environment; sustainable development; risk perceptions); (ii) interpret and evaluate risk assessments and risk management strategies as applied to environment and health concerns; (iii) show a theoretical and practical understanding of the design and analysis of studies in environmental epidemiology; (iv) analyse the political and social contexts in which an environment and health policy is made, the factors that lead to policy change, and in particular, the role that research plays in policy change; (v) show competence in critically evaluating and communicating research evidence in relation to environment and health issues.

This stream provides students with a sound understanding of the theoretical basis of health promotion, to equip them with conceptual and practical skills to design and evaluate health promotion programmes, and to enable them to formulate health promotion policies. Health promotion draws on theories and methods from psychology, sociology, anthropology, education, epidemiology and other disciplines to elaborate an understanding of the ways in which the health of populations is maintained and strengthened. This is applied to the design, implementation and evaluation of effective actions to maintain and strengthen health. The stream is taken by individuals from diverse cultures and a wide range of disciplines and work experiences, including social and health sciences, public services, international agencies, and the voluntary and private sectors. Graduates work in practice, management, research and teaching in health promotion, public health, health policy and related fields at local, national and international level.

By the end of this stream students should be able to demonstrate ability to apply knowledge of the core disciplines of public health, consisting of statistics; epidemiology; health economics; and social research, to real world health problems. In addition, they should be able to: (i) demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the the principle theories, methods and interventions used in health promotion;(ii) demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the development of health promotion in the UK and internationally and its evolution as a multidisciplinary field; (iii) assess the appropriate use of population-wide versus targeted health promotion interventions; (iv) relate policy on improving health to the underlying problems of disease in the context of a variety of social and economic backgrounds; (v) ) show competence in critically evaluating and communicating research evidence, and (vi) apply the knowledge and analytical skills they have gained to inform health promotion policy making, programme planning, implementation and evaluation, and research design.

This stream provides a foundation for the understanding of health services management by drawing on a wide range of academic disciplines and to enable students to develop knowledge, understanding and capability in various scientific methods and fields of study that are relevant to strategic management. Changes are taking place in the organisation and management of health services. The aims of these changes include increases in efficiency and cost-effectiveness and the provision of greater choice for patients. In many cases the management of services is being decentralised and greater autonomy is being given to service providers. As a consequence, managers need to acquire new skills to enable them to assess needs, set priorities, contract for service delivery, monitor quality and manage change. The stream is aimed at health service managers, planners and policy-makers or those who plan a career in these fields from high-, middle- and low-income countries. Graduates from this stream go on to a range of management positions in ministries of health around the world, the UK National Health Service, non-governmental organisations, international agencies and management consultancies.

By the end of this stream students should be able to demonstrate ability to apply knowledge of the core disciplines of public health, consisting of statistics; epidemiology; health economics; and social research, to real world health problems. In addition, students will be able to: (i) analyse the principles, structure and functions of health systems, including their financial, organisational and policy-making processes and systems; (ii) critically assess and apply a range of key management concepts and functions in a range of health care settings; (iv) appreciate the role and contribution of economic theory, organisational theory and approaches to management in the field of health care; (v) show competence in critically evaluating and communicating research evidence; and (vi) apply knowledge of effective team-working and communication skills to solve problems and achieve specific goals.
