Call for papers: 6th conference The International Society for Research on Innovation and Change in Health Care Systems (ISRICH)
Location: Paris, France
Dates: 26 and 27th April 2012
Submission deadline: February 25th 2012
The International Society for Research on Innovation and Change in Health Care Systems (ISRICH) is an initiative of researchers in various countries who wish to exchange research results and national and international experiences on a regular basis. Their main interest is to explain the factors that affect the evolution of health care systems and their interaction with the wider environment in society, politics and culture.
Call for paper: what consequences can we anticipate from the globalization of the health care?
For over thirty years, the creation of transnational health groups and the global dissemination of medical innovations have profoundly changed the health care systems that were originally built on national or local bases.
Many countries, including Tunisia, Hungary, Thailand and recently India, have chosen to make heath care a developmental priority, which has resulted in diverse benefits for their respective territories and for mankind. What is the projected impact of the varied public policies in these regions? Does innovation really play a role in the improvement of health care systems?
Faced with requests for adaptations in this sector (e.g., management arrival, budgetary constraints, professional “crises”), different national and local adaptation strategies have been tested. Is the globalization of health care subject to the development of regions or, on the contrary, does it participate in the development of regions?
Alongside regions, patients and health care professionals must integrate with these developments. How do health professionals involved in this new landscape of health care position themselves? What adaptation strategies have they effectively put in place?
The principal themes of study are:
- What are the consequences of the new world order when it comes to health?
- What are the consequences of the specialization of territories or regions in each health care sector?
- What are the new material and symbolic boundaries of care, and what is their impact on patients, health professionals, and the practice of health care itself?
Website for the conference:
Information regarding the conference proceedings will be available on the following website: http://www.isrich.eu.
Paper submission:
Invitation to the conference is based on a paper of around 20 pages. The paper must include information on the relevant theories being tested, methodology, data, and (expected) results. The proposal must provide a concise title, author details, mailing address, telephone numbers and e-mail address.

Call for Abstracts: 11th Annual Canadian Health Economists' Study Group Conference (CHESG)
Location: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Dates: June 6-7, 2012
Full-Paper submission deadline: February 27, 2012
The Canadian Health Economist’s Study Group is an annual conference of economists with an interest in theoretical or empirical economic analysis of issues related to health or health care. The conference typically covers a day and a half.
Dr. Donald Kenkel and Dr. Joseph Terza will each deliver a keynote address. Dr. Kenkel’s research focuses on the economics of disease prevention and health promotion. In particular, his research on the economics of public health policies has focused on the use of alcohol taxes and other policies to prevent alcohol problems, the use of cigarette taxes to prevent youth smoking, and the effect of advertising to promote smoking cessation. Dr. Terza’s research focuses on applied health econometrics, specializing in the development and application of nonlinear econometric methods for the analysis of health policy using survey (non-experimental) data. In particular, his recent health policy research has looked at labor market outcomes of individuals with spinal cord injury, the use and finance of prescription drugs for the elderly, and the economic causes and consequences of substance abuse.
Meals will be provided. All other expenses, including transportation and lodging, are the participant’s responsibility. Selection of papers for presentation is done by a local scientific committee, based on submission of completed papers, not abstracts.
Ten papers will be accepted for presentation. The conference will consist of a full day of presentations on Wednesday, June 6 and a half-day of presentations on Thursday, June 7. Each paper is allotted 45 minutes for the presentation, comments from a discussant, and general discussion. Submissions are invited from any geographical location.
If you would like to present, please submit a complete draft in two versions: (i) an anonymized version, and (ii) a version containing author(s) contact information. Submissions should be in an electronic format (.doc or .pdf) and sent to chesg@ualberta.ca by February 27, 2012. Submissions should be unpublished. Decisions will be made by April 1, 2012. Call for Papers: Health. Development. Inequality.: Economic modelling of how health and inequalities shape development.
Location: Darmstadt, Germany
Date: 1-3 June 2012
Submission deadline: February 28, 2012
The goal of this conference is to bring together international scholars working on aspects of the health and development nexus for exchange of ideas and discussion of recent results within theoretical and applied economic research.
It has long been recognized that poor health is a major obstacle to the progress of developing countries. Still, however, little is known about the mechanisms linking health and development. Furthermore, policies need to be based on a clear understanding of the relevant causal relationships. It is the aim of the conference to expand our knowledge on these issues.
Call for Papers
Theoretical as well as empirical contributions are welcome.
Suitable topics are:
- The role of market failures for health outcomes in developing countries
- The interdependence between poverty and health
- Mortality differences across time and space
- The political economy of health and underdevelopment
- The relationship between health, economic growth, and globalization
- Health inequalities and their consequences for impoverishment and income inequality
- The role of knowledge and education in the production of health
Papers on relevant topics should be sent in pdf format before February 28, 2012 to karlsson@vwl.tu-darmstadt.de. Contributions from young researchers are encouraged. The conference fee is waived for participants giving papers.

Applied Workshop, Using Discrete Choice Experiments in Health Economics: Theoretical and Practical Issues
Location: Banff, Alberta
Venue: Banff Conference Centre
Date: April 9th-11th, 2012
Registration deadline: February 1, 2012
Conducted by the Health Economics Research Unit, University of Aberdeen and Calgary Institute for Population and Public Health, University of Calgary
Presenters: Professor Mandy Ryan, Dr Verity Watson and Dr Deborah Marshall
Background
In publicly provided health care systems finite resources coupled with increasing demand for health care requires decisions about what is the most efficient allocation of scarce health care resources. This requires information about the costs and benefits of health care. Given the lack of a market for health care, economic techniques provide values for health care benefits. One technique adopted by and further developed in health economics over the past decade is the discrete choice experiment (DCE) approach. Given the increasing importance put on patient centred care, and the recognised importance of valuing patient experiences in the delivery of health care, the application of DCEs in health is likely to increase.
Aims Of The Workshop
- Background information about the theoretical basis for, and development and application of DCEs in health care.
- Hands on experience of the design of DCEs, and data input, analysis and interpretation.
- An update on methodological issues raised in the application of DCEs.

Call for Papers: IV Workshop on Social Capital and Health
Location: Padova, Italy
Dates: 4-5 October 2012
Submission deadline: April 30th 2012
Following the workshops in Berkeley (2006) Paris (2008) and Oslo (2010) we now invite the submission of draft papers or extended abstracts for a fourth workshop of the Social Capital and Health Global Network. This event will take place in Padova, Italy 4-5 October 2012 organized by the University of Padova.
During the last few years there has been a considerable increase in the interest and in the number of publications on the relation between social capital and health. The literature consists both of theoretical studies, studies based on micro-data within a single country and comparative cross-country studies at the aggregate and disaggregated levels. Relatively less attention has been devoted on the channels through which social capital influence health.
The workshop is open for all these types of contributions, and in particular for contributions that focus on an economic approach and contributions that aim at revealing the causal effect of social capital on health, especially if they go beyond reduced form models and try to identify the channels through which social capital influences health (e.g. health-related behaviors, social support, psychological support, enhanced circulation of health-relevant information, non opportunistic behaviors between patients and health care providers among others) .
Papers for the workshop will be selected on the basis of draft papers or extended abstracts. Although draft papers are preferred, abstracts (minimum 600 words) that describe methods, results and data (if relevant) will also be considered. The deadline for submitting draft papers or extended abstracts is April 30th 2012. Papers or abstracts must be submitted electronically (PDF or Word) by email to lorenzo.rocco@unipd.it. Authors will be notified about acceptance by June 15th and will be required to provide electronic versions (PDF or Word) of the final paper by September 1st. Papers will be posted on the workshop website in downloadable format. Each paper will have an appointed discussant.
For the first time, a unique opportunity of dissemination is offered to participants. 2012 National Health Law Conference: Global Health Challenges and the Role of Law
Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Venue: Metropolitan Hotel
Date: May 4 and 5, 2012
Register at: http://www.law.utoronto.ca/conferences/2012NHLC.html
This conference will bring together leading scholars, policy-makers, practicing lawyers and health care professionals to explore how law can address global health challenges and make real progressive change.
The kinds of global challenges participants will explore include:
- Access to care and essential medicines on the part of the most vulnerable (poor, mentally ill, aboriginal populations)
- The rise and inequitable impact of medical tourism
- The spread of chronic diseases around the world
- Exponential increases in smoking in many countries
- The obesity epidemic and so forth…
In the legal world we think we can meet these challenges through law and litigation - for example human rights litigation - but to what extent is that true and what are the context and circumstances where law/litigation can really make a positive difference? And where is law simply used by vested interests to further inequities?
Confirmed speakers include:
- Mary Anne Bobinski, Faculty of Law, University of British Columbia
- Timothy Caulfield, Faculty of Law, University of Alberta
- I. Glenn Cohen, Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics , Harvard Law School
- Rebecca Cook, Faculty of Law, University of Toronto
- Jocelyn Downie, Schulich School of Law, Dalhousie University
- Colleen M. Flood, Faculty of Law, University of Toronto
- Richard Gold, McGill University
- Lawrence O. Gostin, O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law, Georgetown Law

On-line booking for 2012 dates is now open and available via the main YEW web site
The York Expert Workshops are now in their 19th year. Over this period, decision-makers’ demands for information on the cost-effectiveness of health technologies have become more extensive and more sophisticated. At least 7 European countries and several managed care groups in the USA now require formal submissions of economic data as part of the reimbursement process for medicines.
In order to keep pace with these developments, the York Expert Workshops programme is frequently updated, ensuring continued success. Several years ago our Advanced Workshop was extended from 3 to 5 days and structured according to the main steps necessary to generate estimates of cost-effectiveness for a specific decision-maker, such as a reimbursement agency or health care payer. The Advanced Workshop goes beyond the exposition of general principles and includes detailed discussion of the analytic approaches required to compile an economic dossier, using a mixture of presentations, tutored sessions and practical exercises.
In 2008 our Foundations Workshop was also extended from 3 to 5 days, in response to participants’ requests for more case studies and exercises. In addition, the statistical issues are now discussed in more depth so that participants are better prepared for more advanced study.
Our 3-day Quality of Life Workshop provides a detailed introduction to the theory and practice of quality of life measurement with particular emphasis on its use in economic evaluation.
Objectives:
To inform and promote understanding in key areas of quality of life assessment and health economic evaluation.
- How to decide whether a particular evaluation is necessary.
- How to choose a particular methodology.
- How to identify the data required and appropriate instruments for data collection.
- How to undertake appropriate analysis.
- How to communicate the results effectively.
Created For:
- Anyone involved in initiating, undertaking, managing or interpreting economic evaluations or quality of life assessments of medicines.
Within:
- pharmaceutical and medical device companies;
- clinical and health services research;
- health care decision-making.
Further information about our 2012 York Expert Workshops can be accessed at the following web sites:
On-line booking is now open and available via the main YEW web site
Please note that our 2012 YEW registration fees are UK VAT exempt.
19th annual RAND Summer Institute (RSI)
Location: Santa Monica, California, USA
Dates: July 9-12, 2012
RAND is pleased to announce the 19th annual RAND Summer Institute (RSI), which will take place in Santa Monica, CA, July 9-12, 2012. The RSI consists of two conferences addressing critical issues facing our aging population: a Mini-Medical School for Social Scientists (July 9-10) and a Workshop on the Demography, Economics, Psychology, and Epidemiology of Aging (July 11-12). The primary aim of the RSI is to expose scholars interested in the study of aging to a wide range of research being conducted in fields beyond their own specialties.
The Mini-Med School focuses on biomedical issues relating to aging and should be of interest to all non-medically trained scholars regardless of background. Topics will be drawn from the diverse fields of biomedicine, including biology, genetics, patient care, psychiatry, and other areas. Expert clinicians and researchers will provide participants with insight into the science of aging and a greater understanding of relevant medical issues.
The Workshop on Aging is targeted to pre- and post-doctoral students and
junior faculty, and to more senior researchers new to aging research.
Topics will be drawn from research areas in the social sciences,
including discussions of savings, retirement, disability, demography,
psychology, and quality of life issues. In each session, leading experts
will discuss the state of the literature, integrating results from their
own research and supplementing these overviews with more detailed
analyses of specific topics.
We invite all interested researchers to apply to attend the 2012 RSI. Applicants may apply for fellowship support to pay for travel and accommodations. Both the Mini-Med School and the Workshop on Aging are described more fully at our web site: http://www.rand.org/labor/aging/rsi/. For additional information, please contact Diana Malouf malouf@rand.org.
RSI is sponsored by the National Institute on Aging and the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research at the National Institutes of Health. RAND is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
