Reducing health inequalities is becoming one of the paramount priorities for the European Union. For Economics, equity is a treat. Although top economists have contributed to the field, the trade-off between efficiency and equity is not yet well solved. How can fairness be integrated in the studies of economic evaluation? How to measure equity in delivery and funding health systems? How could equity be preserved in the running times of economic downturn? Many important questions still remain open. We invite you to contribute to the issue in this workshop.
Session 1: Advances and approaches in the EU to reduce health inequalities
Session 2: Monitoring equity in delivering and funding health systems. Indicators and case studies
Session 3: Priorization. Tackling equity in the studies of economic evaluation

The York Expert Workshops are now in their 18th year. Over this period, decision-makers’ demands for information on the cost-effectiveness of health technologies have become more extensive and more sophisticated. At least 7 European countries and several managed care groups in the USA now require formal submissions of economic data as part o f the reimbursement process for medicines.
In order to keep pace with these developments, the York Expert Workshops programme is frequently updated, ensuring continued success. Several years ago our Advanced Workshop was extended from 3 to 5 days and structured according to the main steps necessary to generate estimates of cost-effectiveness for a specific decision-maker, such as a reimbursement agency or health care payer. The Advanced Workshop goes beyond the exposition of general principles and includes detailed discussion of the analytic approaches required to compile an economic dossier, using a mixture of presentations, tutored sessions and practical exercises.
In 2008 our Foundations Workshop was also extended from 3 to 5 days, in response to participants’ requests for more case studies and exercises. In addition, the statistical issues are now discussed in more depth so that participants are better prepared for more advanced study.
Our 3-day Quality of Life Workshop provides a detailed introduction to the theory and practice of quality of life measurement with particular emphasis on its use in economic evaluation.
Objectives:
To inform and promote understanding in key areas of quality of life assessment and health economic evaluation.
- How to decide whether a particular evaluation is necessary.
- How to choose a particular methodology.
- How to identify the data required and appropriate instruments for data collection.
- How to undertake appropriate analysis.
- How to communicate the results effectively.
Created for:
- Anyone involved in initiating, undertaking, managing or interpreting economic evaluations or quality of life assessments of medicines.
Within:
- pharmaceutical and medical device companies;
- clinical and health services research;
- health care decision-making.

Abstract submission deadline: 20 May 2011
The third Wellcome Trust’s Scottish Health Informatics Programme (SHIP) 3-day inter-disciplinary Conference will gather together an international group of researchers who have expertise in the linkage of administrative or routine data for health research or health care improvement.
The plenary speakers confirmed are:
- Dr Harry Burns MPH FRCS (Glas) FRCP(Ed) FFPH, Chief Medical Officer for Scotland

We invite abstracts on one of four broad themes:
The value of record linkage in health research
This theme will include papers based on one-off, general-purpose or longitudinal studies which demonstrate the range of research benefits that result from record linkage. We would be particularly interested in studies that have linked health data to other routine/ survey data (eg housing, education, welfare, census datasets) to data in order to answer health questions.
The use of routinely collected data in clinical trials
The use of administrative data, registry data and/ or electronic patient records in support of clinical trials. We are interested in the use of such data to support any aspect of trial conduct, including trial design, trial feasibility, recruitment, within- and post-trial follow-up, pharmacovigilance and study monitoring.
Patients Rights and the Public Interest: What does good governance look like?
The organisers welcome papers on questions relating to principles and best practices in good governance of research involving health-related records. Topics might include the role of consent and opt-in/opt-out mechanisms, the importance and limits of anonymisation in protection patients’ interests, and/or the role and legitimacy of advisory bodies in approving research when consent is not sought.
The methodological challenges of record linkage
This theme will include papers on state-of-the-art techniques for record linkage. Techniques might include methods for record linkage, disclosure control, data management and analysis of linked data.

International Society for Equity in Health 6th International Conference: Making Policy a Health Equity Building Process
Location: Cartagena de Indias, Colombia
Dates: September 26-28, 2011
Equity is an important issue to champion for, and is far for been overcome by governments, international or global institution, or academia. However nobody disagrees with it because is too broad. We would like to provide more detail, be more specific and, at the same time, offer a multi disciplinary look. Following this, we intend to “qualify” equity, defining a series of key topics:
- Inequity in access to essential drugs
- Inequity in access to high cost treatments
- Inequity in access to primary health care
- Inequity in the process of health care provision
- Sexual and reproductive health and equity
- Financially catastrophic out of pocket expenditures in health
- Community Participants and health equity
- Quality assurance and its impact to equity
- Communication campaigns, advocacy and health
- Equity to care in different health systems and the impact on equity of Health reforms (decentralization, primary health care strategies, georeference).
- Impact evaluation of health programs and health promotion interventions
- Environment, water, sanitation and inequity in health status and treatment
Equity is not only a research issue. It requires an interdisciplinary approach and a research and policy partnership showing clear experiences about how to reach equity in health. Therefore, we identify certain arenas where research and policymaking interact:
- Political economy of health reforms
- Program evaluation
- Governance
