The Economics of Health Reconsidered

Authors: Thomas Rice and Lynn Unruh

A third edition of The Economics of Health Reconsidered has been published by Health Administration Press (Chicago). This edition is very different from the previous ones. Thomas Rice is now joined by a co-author, Lynn Unruh, who is trained as a health economist and a nurse. The book is now designed as a stand-alone text for health economics courses. There are three entirely new chapters: (1) a thorough review of microeconomic theory, which is designed to replace a micro textbook; (2) a new chapter on for-profit and non-profit health care organizations; and (3) a new chapter on health care workforce issues, including the markets for physicians and nurses. The theme of the book remains the same, however. It uses economic theory and empirical evidence to show that a competitive marketplace will not necessarily result in the best health system. Complimentary desk copies can be obtained from the publisher by emailing hap1@ache.org and indicating: (a) the name of the class, (b) estimated number of students; (c) level of students (grad/undergrad); (d) proposed use of text (primary, supplemental, recommended reading); and (e) a contact name to verify instructor status.
