Applications in Health Economics
Author: Paul J. Feldstein
This manuscript was written in the hope that if students can see the relevance of the economic concepts they are learning, they will remember them better. The 85 health care applications included in this manuscript, which illustrate the relevance of microeconomics to health care issues, are organized according to the topics covered in a beginning microeconomics course. Each application is illustrated by one or more diagrams. Many of the micro topics have multiple applications. In discussing each application, a brief explanation of the underlying micro concept is often provided to aid students in understanding the application. In some more complex sections, such as production theory and cost curves, the explanation is more extensive.
This manuscript may be considered as a text for health economics courses with no microeconomics prerequisite, which combine microeconomics and health care in a single course.
This manuscript can also be used as a supplementary text for courses in health services, health policy, and health economics.
Given the high price of textbooks, being able to order a hardcopy of this manuscript through the website should make it more accessible to those interested in health care economics.
