About the Book

This book provides a concise synthesis of leading edge research in the theory and practise of efficiency measurement in health and health care. Whilst much of the literature in this area is confusing and impregnable, Hollingsworth and Peacock show the logical links between the economic theory underlying efficiency, the methods used in analysis and practical application of measurement techniques including Data Envelopment Analysis and Stochastic Frontiers Analysis.

The book outlines which methods are most suitable in which setting, how to specify valid models, and how to undertake a study and effectively disseminate results. The current state of the art is assessed in terms of methods and published applications, and undertakes practical applications of advanced methods, including analysis of economies of scale and scope, variable weightings, specification testing, and estimation of the efficient production of health.

Finally, the way forward in efficiency measurement in health is outlined, mapping out an agenda for future research and policy development.

Applications in Health Economics

Author: Paul J. Feldstein

This manuscript was written in the hope that if students can see the relevance of the economic concepts they are learning, they will remember them better. The 85 health care applications included in this manuscript, which illustrate the relevance of microeconomics to health care issues, are organized according to the topics covered in a beginning microeconomics course. Each application is illustrated by one or more diagrams. Many of the micro topics have multiple applications. In discussing each application, a brief explanation of the underlying micro concept is often provided to aid students in understanding the application. In some more complex sections, such as production theory and cost curves, the explanation is more extensive.

This manuscript may be considered as a text for health economics courses with no microeconomics prerequisite, which combine microeconomics and health care in a single course.

This manuscript can also be used as a supplementary text for courses in health services, health policy, and health economics.

Given the high price of textbooks, being able to order a hardcopy of this manuscript through the website should make it more accessible to those interested in health care economics.
